Orthoepy and Prosody

Contextualization

The Portuguese language, like many others, is not limited to writing and reading. The correct pronunciation of words and the way we emphasize syllables are also fundamental aspects for effective communication. Here, we enter the field of study known as phonetics, which is divided into three main areas: accentuation, orthoepy, and prosody.

Accentuation studies the correct graphical accentuation of words, that is, where the accent should be placed in the word. Orthoepy, in turn, deals with the correct pronunciation of phonemes, so that the word is clearly understood. Prosody focuses on rhythm, intonation, and correct speech accentuation, that is, it emphasizes the way we pronounce words and organize sentences, this aspect is very important for understanding the message we want to convey.

But why do we need to learn about accentuation, orthoepy, and prosody? In today's world, in which communication has become even more important, whether on social networks, at work, or in academia, speaking correctly and within the norms of the language is crucial. Pronunciation or accentuation errors can lead to misunderstandings and even damage your professional image. Furthermore, language is a fundamental element of our cultural identity, and knowing its norms and rules helps us appreciate our heritage and express ourselves more effectively.

To delve deeper into the subject, we suggest reading the book "Manual de Fonética" by Francisco Espada (Editora Lidel, 2015), which has chapters dedicated to accentuation, orthoepy, and prosody. On the Internet, there are also free courses and educational videos on the subject, such as the Canal do Ensino de Português on YouTube, which presents detailed lessons on each of these topics.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Voices of Portuguese: Accentuation, Orthoepy, and Prosody in Practice

Project Objective:

To develop an understanding of the concepts of accentuation, orthoepy, and prosody, through the study and creation of a "Linguistic Podcast" where each group of 3 to 5 students will have to produce episodes related to these concepts and demonstrate their technical and socio-emotional skills acquired during the project.

Detailed project description:

The project consists of creating a podcast with episodes that explain and demonstrate the principles of accentuation, orthoepy, and prosody. Each group will be responsible for creating a minimum of three episodes, each dedicated to one of these topics. The episodes should include discussions on the concepts, practical examples and, for the episode dedicated to prosody, a dramatization of a literary text, showing different forms of expression through intonation and speech rhythm.

Materials Required:

  • Computer with internet access
  • Audio recording and editing software (can be free software like Audacity)
  • Microphone (optional)
  • Literary texts for interpretation (poems, excerpts from plays, among others)
  • Books and digital materials for research

Detailed step by step:

  1. Formation of groups of 3 to 5 students and division of tasks.
  2. Research and study on accentuation, orthoepy, and prosody, noting the main information and key concepts.
  3. Meetings to discuss content and prepare the script for each episode.
  4. Recording the episode on accentuation, explaining the concept and giving practical examples.
  5. Recording the episode on orthoepy, in the same way as the previous one.
  6. Selection of the literary text to be dramatized in the episode on prosody and reading rehearsal.
  7. Recording the episode on prosody, with the dramatization of the chosen text.
  8. Editing the episodes and preparing for presentation.
  9. Writing the final document, with introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography used.

The project should take more than twelve hours per student to complete. It should deal with more than four key theoretical topics or concepts and involve at least two disciplines.

The final document will be a report on the project, with:

1. Introduction: The student should contextualize the theme, its relevance, and application in the real world, as well as the objective of this project.

2. Development: The student should explain the theory behind the central theme(s) of the project, explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.

3. Conclusion: The student should conclude the work by returning to their main points, explaining the lessons learned, and the conclusions drawn about the project.

4. Bibliography: The sources used for research and preparation of the episodes should be indicated in this topic of the report.
