Project Goal:
This activity aims to further develop the knowledge and understanding of the concepts of homonyms, homographs, homophones and paronyms through the creation and resolution of a crossword puzzle, in addition to developing teamwork skills.
Project Description:
Each group will be responsible for creating a crossword puzzle that includes 20 words which fall under the concepts of homonyms, homographs, homophones and paronyms. The words will be equally divided between each concept (5 for each). Each word will have a clue, which should relate to its meaning and the concept under which it belongs.
Materials Needed:
- Grammar books and reliable online sources for research purposes.
- Graph paper for the crossword puzzle grid.
- Coloured pens or pencils.
- Computer for typing the report.
Activity Step-by-Step:
- Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
- Each group should research and select 5 words that fit under each of the following concepts: homonyms, homographs, homophones and paronyms. Each selected word must be accompanied by a definition or clue that relates to the corresponding concept.
- Once the words have been selected, the groups should create the crossword puzzle layout. The grid should be big enough to fit all the chosen words.
- Implement the crossword puzzle by placing the chosen words according to the clues or definitions developed.
- Once the crossword puzzle has been finalised, each group should solve the crossword puzzle created by another group. They should note down any difficulties they encounter, which words were the most challenging and which concepts became clearer after solving.
Project Deliverables:
- Presentation of the game: Each group should present their crossword puzzle to the class, explaining the project creation process and the rules of the game.
- Final report: Each group should write a report including the following topics:
- Introduction: Provide context for the topic, its real-world applications and relevance, and this project's goal. It must also present the concepts of each of the words: homonyms, homographs, homophones and paronyms.
- Development: The group should explain in detail the research process and selection of the words, creation of the crossword puzzle and any difficulties faced during the process. They should also comment on their experience of solving the puzzle created by another group, the difficulties encountered and the lessons learned.
