Understanding the functioning of this system is essential to realize how our bodies obtain energy and nutrients from the food we consume, and how errors in this process can lead to diseases and disorders.

Eating is an essential activity for life, and the digestive system plays the main role in converting the food we ingest into energy and nutrients for the body. A clear understanding of how this system works can help us make more informed decisions about our diet and lifestyle.

Moreover, many of the greatest threats to global health, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, are directly related to nutrition and, therefore, to the functioning of the digestive system. Therefore, knowing this system well is essential for those who want to understand and combat these diseases.

Project Objective

Through careful analysis, students will be able to understand the digestive system in depth, as well as the functions of each organ involved in the digestion process. Through a practical and playful activity, students will be encouraged to work in teams and expand their knowledge about this important system of the human body.

Detailed Project Description

Students, in groups of 3 to 5, will investigate and present the different organs and functions of the digestive system. For this, each group will be responsible for building a model representing the digestive system, using various recyclable and easily accessible materials to represent each organ. In addition to the model, each group must prepare a presentation, where they will explain the relevance and function of each organ and how they interact for food digestion.

The groups will have one week to complete the task, and each student should invest from two to four hours in the activity.

Required Materials

• Various recyclable materials (cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, newspaper, toilet paper rolls, etc.)
• Various colored paints
• Paintbrushes
• Glue
• Scissors
• Cardboard or poster board
• Markers or highlighters
• Research materials (books, internet, encyclopedias)

Detailed Activity Steps

1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.

2. Each group should start the project by researching the digestive system and its functions, using the suggested resources or others of their choice.

3. After the research phase, each group should plan and design the layout of their model.

4. With the model project finalized, it is time to start the construction. Using recyclable materials, each group should create a three-dimensional representation of the digestive system.
