Chemical solutions are constantly present in our daily lives, even if we don't always realize it. They can be found in various situations, such as food preparation, household cleaning, drug production, and even in industrial processes. It's no wonder that these homogeneous mixtures are one of the most important topics in Chemistry.
This project proposes a deep and playful exploration of the different types of solutions: aqueous solution, saturated, unsaturated, and supersaturated. By understanding these variations, students will be able to observe and perceive the presence and application of solutions in the world around them, as well as being able to consciously manipulate them in chemical experiments.
Theoretical Introduction
A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. The component of the mixture that dissolves is called the solute, and the substance in which the solute dissolves is called the solvent. In the case of an aqueous solution, water is the solvent.
Depending on the amount of solute that dissolves in a certain amount of solvent, solutions can be classified as saturated, unsaturated, and supersaturated. An unsaturated solution is one in which there is still the capacity to dissolve more solute. In a saturated solution, the amount of solute that can dissolve has reached the maximum capacity. In turn, a supersaturated solution contains more solute than it would be able to dissolve under normal conditions.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: Creating and Classifying Solutions
Activity Objective
This activity aims to provide students with a practical experience to understand and differentiate the types of chemical solutions, such as aqueous, saturated, unsaturated, and supersaturated.
Detailed Activity Description
The groups of students will create, in practice, each type of solution using simple and common materials. They should observe and record the characteristics and differences between them. In addition, they will need to research to reinforce the theoretical understanding of these concepts.
Necessary Materials
- Transparent containers
- Water
- Table salt
- Sugar
- Spoons
- Scale (optional)
Activity Steps
- Gather in groups of 3 to 5 students and distribute tasks among the members.
- Look for reliable sources to study the types of solutions (some suggestions were given earlier). Present the information clearly and organized.
- In one of the containers, put water halfway. This will be the solvent of the aqueous solution.
- Slowly add salt to the water, stirring constantly until you notice that the salt no longer dissolves. You have created a saturated solution.
- In another container, repeat step 4, but now stop adding salt before it starts to accumulate at the bottom of the container. You have created an unsaturated solution.
- Now, to create the supersaturated solution, heat a quantity of water and add sugar, continue adding until you realize that it no longer dissolves. As it cools, you will notice sugar crystals forming, characterizing the supersaturated solution.
- Observe, compare, and record the characteristics of each solution created.
- Practical activities should be carried out in an approximate time of two to four hours.
Project Deliverables and Report Elaboration Guidelines
After completing the practical activity, each group must prepare a report, containing the following sections:
- Introduction: Provide context for the theme, its relevance, and application. Also, indicate the objective of this project.
- Development: Explain the theory about the types of solutions. Then, explain the activity carried out, indicate how it was developed, and what results were obtained.
- Conclusion: Conclude the work by summarizing its main points and explaining the learnings obtained. Also, draw conclusions about the project.
- Bibliography: Indicate the bibliographic references that supported the work on the project.
