Contextualization

The study of dilution is vital in Chemistry, and it is no different when it comes to high school education. Dilution is not just the action of adding solvent to a solution to decrease its concentration; it is a common practice in many scientific and everyday fields, from medicine to cooking, through agriculture and the arts. Dilution is a fundamental concept to understand how many chemical phenomena work, and that is why we will dedicate our time to study it deeply.

Dilution occurs when we add more solvent to a solution, decreasing the solute concentration. It is an important process for analytical and environmental chemistry, medicine, biology, and many other fields of science. In chemistry, the main objective of dilution is to reduce the concentration of a solute (usually a strong acid or base) to a level that is safe and useful for chemical reactions.

In the real world, dilution is often used to prepare less concentrated solutions from a more concentrated one. For example, have you ever wondered how liquid medications are prepared? Or how farmers prepare pesticides for spraying? Or even, how do we get different flavors when making a concentrated juice? In all these cases, dilution is the process behind it.

Introduction

In high school, we study dilution in our chemistry class to understand these practices and know how to calculate the correct concentrations for our needs. We start with concentrated solutions and slowly add the solvent, observing the concentration changes.

Studying dilution will lead us to explore important concepts such as concentration, mole, volume, and proportions, which are fundamental to chemistry. Furthermore, it will allow us to develop practical skills, such as precise measurement of liquids, safe handling of materials and chemical solutions, and correct use of laboratory equipment.

Activity Title: "Diluting to Understand"

Project Objective

  • Understand and experience the concept of dilution;

  • Develop time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity skills.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group must perform a series of serial dilutions using a food coloring solution. In context, it is as if each group were responsible for creating different shades of a color for a paint company. The groups' task will be to dilute the dye correctly to achieve the desired different shades.

The activity will be divided into two main parts: practical and theoretical. For the practical part, each group must perform the dilution and document the entire process with photos and notes. For the theoretical part, each group must produce a complete report on the practical activity, explaining in detail the dilution process and the results obtained.

  • Food coloring
  • Beakers of different capacities

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Each group will receive a fixed amount of dye and the task of producing five different shades of the dye color from the original solution.

  2. Students must calculate the amount of water needed to dilute the dye for each desired shade.

  3. After performing the calculations, the groups must carry out the dilution, following laboratory safety standards.

  4. During the dilution, students must record the process, taking photos and making notes about each step.

  5. After completing the practical activity, each group must write a detailed project report, including the following topics:

    • Introduction: The group must contextualize the theme, its relevance and real-world application, and the objective of this project.
    • Development: The group must explain the theory behind the project's central theme, detail the activity, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.
    • Conclusion: The group must conclude the work by summarizing its main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions about the project.
    • Bibliography: The group must indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.
