Contextualization

We introduce to you, dear students, the fascinating universe of chemical solutions. We are not talking about solving mathematical problems or finding the answer to a challenge. In the field of chemistry, a solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. These substances can be solid, liquid, or gaseous. The study and understanding of solutions and their different types are essential for a wide range of applications ranging from biochemistry to industrial process engineering.

Solutions can be classified into different types based on how their components interact with each other, such as aqueous, saturated, unsaturated, and supersaturated solutions. Understanding the characteristics of each of these types of solutions is fundamental, not only for the academic world but also for various daily activities, from food preparation to understanding how our body processes different substances.

Our work throughout this project will not only be to understand these concepts but also to explore some of the many practical applications of solutions. We intend to do this in an engaging and collaborative way, where everyone has a part to play and something valuable to contribute.

Solutions are present everywhere around us. The fresh water we drink, the air we breathe, the foods and medicines we consume, all are examples of solutions. As such, it is of utmost importance not only for chemists but also for professionals from various other fields, such as medicine, engineering, biology, and the environment, to understand the fundamentals of solution behavior.

Throughout this project, you will be guided to carry out a series of experiments that will help you better understand the theory behind the different types of solutions. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to go beyond theory and see these concepts in action.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Exploring the Types of Chemical Solutions: A Practical Approach"

Project Objective:

This project aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the types of chemical solutions: aqueous, saturated, unsaturated, and supersaturated solutions. Additionally, it seeks to promote collaboration, communication, and time management of students through group work.

Detailed Project Description:

Each group of students (3 to 5) will prepare the four types of chemical solutions: aqueous, saturated, unsaturated, and supersaturated. The students will conduct experiments, collect and analyze data, and detail the entire procedure in a comprehensive report. The project will last about 2 weeks, with an estimated time of 12 hours per student to complete, including experiments, data analysis, report writing, and presentation of results.

Required Materials:

  • 3 transparent glass containers
  • Stirrer
  • Common salt (NaCl)
  • Water
  • Scale
  • Thermometer
  • Paper and pen for notes

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Initially, students should gather to discuss and plan the project execution, as well as task division.
  2. Prepare three equal volumes of water at different temperatures: room temperature, heated (about 50ºC), and cooled (about 5ºC).
  3. In the first solution, add salt to room temperature water, stirring constantly until the salt stops dissolving. Note the amount of salt used. This is the saturated solution.
  4. In the second solution, add a similar amount of salt to the one highlighted in the saturated solution, to the heated water. Stir until complete dissolution of the salt. Let the solution cool slowly to room temperature. Observe and note the changes. This is the supersaturated solution.
  5. In the third solution, the cooled water, gradually add salt while stirring constantly until the salt stops dissolving. This will be the unsaturated solution.
  6. Record all data and observations made during the experiment.
  7. Analyze the data and compare the results obtained for the three types of solutions.
  8. Write a report containing: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

Project Deliverables:

Students must deliver a complete report detailing the entire procedure, observations, and conclusions. This report should be written clearly and objectively. The focus should be on presenting the data obtained and discussing these results.

Introduction: Should contain a brief introduction to chemical solutions, their importance and applications, focusing on the types of solutions worked on in this project.

Development: Here, students should present the methodology followed, a detailed description of the experiments conducted, with the notes taken during execution, and discuss the results obtained.

Conclusion: Students should conclude with the conclusions drawn from the experiments, highlighting the learnings and skills developed during the project.

Bibliography: Finally, students should provide a complete list of sources consulted during the work.

Each member of the group should contribute to the report writing, ensuring that all aspects of the group's experience are properly documented.

The project evaluation will consider both the scientific quality of the report, the accuracy of the experiments' execution and interpretation of results, as well as the collaboration and participation of all group members.
