Verbs: Present Perfect Continuous

Contextualization

The English language is incredibly rich and expressive, with a variety of verb forms that allow us to express various nuances of meaning. One of these verb tenses is the Present Perfect Continuous, an intriguing and challenging grammatical form that allows us to express actions that started in the past and continue up to the present moment.

To better understand this verb tense, let's explore its uses, functions, and structures. The Present Perfect Continuous is formed using the auxiliary verb 'have' or 'has' in the present perfect, the verb 'been', and the gerund (verb+ing) of the main verb. It is used to express actions that started in the past and continue up to the present, usually focusing on the duration of the action.

Additionally, the Present Perfect Continuous can be used to express actions that have been happening repeatedly up to the present and may continue into the future, and to emphasize the duration of actions that have recently ended and whose effects are still evident in the present.

The Importance of the Present Perfect Continuous

The ability to use the Present Perfect Continuous competently is essential for effective communication in English. This verb tense allows for the transmission of specific nuances of meaning that simply cannot be expressed using other verb forms. Therefore, a good command of the Present Perfect Continuous can significantly enrich your ability to express yourself in English.

Furthermore, familiarity with the Present Perfect Continuous can contribute to the development of reading and listening skills. This is because the ability to recognize and understand this verb form in English texts and speeches is crucial for the accurate comprehension of such texts and speeches.

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to provide students with the opportunity to explore and practice the Present Perfect Continuous in a fun and engaging context that encourages collaboration and teamwork.

Project Description

Groups will be asked to create and present a short story in English using the Present Perfect Continuous. They must ensure that the story is filled with examples of the correct use of the verb tense in question.

The story can be a drama, comedy, romance, suspense, or any other genre the group chooses. The story should be presented in a video format, which can be a short film, an animation, a podcast with images, a slide presentation, etc.

Required Materials

  1. Paper and pen for script development.
  2. A video camera or cellphone with video recording capability.
  3. Video editing equipment (free software available online can be used).

Step by Step

  1. Brainstorming and Planning: In this phase, groups should gather to discuss ideas for the story. They should choose a genre for the story and begin planning the characters, plot, and how the Present Perfect Continuous will be incorporated into the story.

  2. Script Writing: After deciding on the story details, groups should write the script. They must ensure that the Present Perfect Continuous is used correctly and frequently enough.

  3. Recording and Editing: After finalizing the script, groups should record and edit their video. They can use any presentation style they desire, as long as they follow the script and use the Present Perfect Continuous correctly.

  4. Video Presentation: Groups will present their videos to the class. They should be prepared to answer any questions about the story and the use of the Present Perfect Continuous in the story.

  5. Report Development: Finally, each group should prepare a detailed report on the project, describing the story creation process, the difficulties encountered, how they were overcome, and how the Present Perfect Continuous was incorporated into the story.

Project Deliverables

Students must submit the finalized video and the written report. The report should include, but not be limited to, four main sections:

  • Introduction: Describing the relevance of the Present Perfect Continuous and the project's objective.
  • Development: Discussing the video creation process, including the initial idea, script, recording, and editing. The theory of the Present Perfect Continuous should be explained and how it was incorporated into the story.
  • Conclusions: Commenting on what the students learned from the project, the difficulties encountered, how they were overcome, and conclusions about the use of the Present Perfect Continuous.
  • Bibliography: Indicating which sources were consulted to learn about the Present Perfect Continuous and to help in the story creation.

This project will encourage students to think creatively about the use of the Present Perfect Continuous and to work as a team to produce a detailed video and report. It will provide students with the opportunity to practice using the Present Perfect Continuous in a fun and engaging way, while also developing useful skills such as collaboration, problem-solving, time management, and creative thinking.
