Brazil is a nation of enormous proportions and diversities, one of them being the Midwest region, which encompasses the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and the Federal District. This region is the second largest in the country in terms of area, being crucial for the national economy, especially regarding agriculture and livestock.

In recent times, the region has experienced rapid growth, mainly due to the expansion of agricultural activities. This growth, although it has brought economic benefits, has also led to an increase in deforestation in one of its main landscapes, the Cerrado.

Introduction

The Cerrado is one of the main biomes of the Midwest region and is fundamental for the maintenance of Brazilian biodiversity. This biome houses unique animal and plant species and is characterized by its typical vegetation, composed of savanna, seasonal forests, and fields.

However, the expansion of agricultural activities in the region has resulted in a high deforestation rate, putting at risk the survival of this biome and its species. This deforestation not only affects the flora and fauna but also impacts the region's water resources, as the Cerrado is an important regulator of water systems.

Understanding the dynamics of this growth, the causes and consequences of deforestation, and the characteristics of the Cerrado biome are essential to formulate sustainable development strategies for the region. This is also crucial for the preservation and conservation of the rich biodiversity of the Midwest.

Practical Activity

Title: "Connecting Cerrado: Preservation, Growth, and Deforestation in the Midwest Region"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to promote an in-depth and multi-disciplinary investigation into the growth of the Midwest, the impacts and causes of deforestation in the Cerrado, and the characteristics of this biome, addressing geographical, economic, social, and environmental aspects, and developing a proposal for action for the preservation of the Cerrado and a more sustainable economic development for the region.

Detailed Project Description

Divided into groups of 3 to 5 students, participants will conduct research, data analysis, group discussions, and develop a proposal for action that combines economic development and environmental preservation.

1. Research: Students will conduct research on the topic, using the provided resources and other reliable sources. This research should address the following topics:

   • The economic growth of the Midwest region
   • Agricultural activities and their impact on Cerrado deforestation
   • The importance of the Cerrado and the risks involved in its preservation
   • The perspective of local communities on deforestation and agricultural activities

2. Data Analysis: Students will analyze demographic, economic, social, and environmental data from the Midwest region. This analysis should include:

   • The evolution of economic and demographic growth in the region in recent years
   • The relationship between the expansion of agricultural activities and Cerrado deforestation
   • The conservation status of the Cerrado and the loss of biodiversity

3. Group Discussion: Students will discuss their findings, exchange ideas, and formulate a proposal for action collectively. This proposal should include:

   • Strategies for sustainable economic development in the region
   • Measures for the preservation of the Cerrado and the recovery of degraded areas
   • Ways to involve local communities in the preservation of the biome and in the economic development of the region

4. Proposal for Action: The group will develop a proposal for action that is feasible, practical, and based on the research and analysis conducted. The proposal should include:

   • Actions to combat and prevent deforestation
   • Strategies to promote more sustainable economic development in the region
   • Methods to involve the local community in this process

Students should dedicate approximately 12 hours of study and group work to carry out the proposed activities.

Project Deliverables

Students should produce a final report containing four main topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

1. Introduction: In this topic, students should contextualize the Midwest region, the importance of the Cerrado, and the economic growth of the region. Additionally, they should explain the research objective and what they expect from the conclusions.

2. Development: They should describe the methodology used for research and data analysis, highlighting the various sources of information consulted. After that, they should present and discuss the results obtained, addressing the impacts of economic growth and deforestation on the Cerrado.

3. Conclusion: Students should recap the main points of the research, indicating the lessons learned and the main conclusions drawn. They should also present the action proposal created, explaining their strategies and measures in detail.

4. Bibliography: In this section, students should list all the sources they relied on to carry out the project.

It is expected that by the end of the project, students will have developed research, analysis, discussion, planning, and writing skills, as well as a deep knowledge of the Midwest region and the dynamics between economic growth, deforestation, and Cerrado preservation.
