Contextualization

The Midwest of Brazil is one of the five major regions into which our country is divided, composed of the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and the Federal District. In this region, we find the Cerrado biome, which harbors one of the greatest biodiversities on the planet, with thousands of plant and animal species, some of them unique to this ecosystem. However, the Cerrado has been suffering from accelerated deforestation and agricultural exploitation, situations that endanger its biodiversity and influence the socio-economic dynamics of the region.

Regarding growth, the Midwest region has stood out on the national scene due to the expansion of agribusiness. The expansion of the agricultural frontier into the Cerrado has generated significant socio-environmental impacts, as part of this process involves the deforestation of large areas. Agricultural production on a large scale also influences population dynamics, goods traffic, and political decisions, making the theme of the region's growth, deforestation, and its biomes a fundamental issue for understanding Brazilian socio-environmental problems.

Understanding this reality is essential, not only to comprehend the complexity of Brazilian socio-environmental issues but also to enable us, as citizens, to contribute to the search for sustainable and equitable solutions. The Midwest is home to a variety of cultures and populations, such as indigenous peoples, quilombolas, and traditional communities, whose agro-extractive practices and ways of life are deeply rooted in the nature of the Cerrado.

Analysis and presentation of the impacts of the growth of the Midwest region, deforestation of the Cerrado, and its biomes

Project Objective:

The purpose of this project is to delve into the complex topics of the growth of the Brazilian Midwest and its socio-environmental impacts. Students will be encouraged to understand and analyze aspects related to the deforestation of the Cerrado, its biomes, and how the region's growth influences all of this. This activity will serve for a better understanding of the dynamics of the Midwest region, providing a broad view of the challenges and opportunities present there.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group must conduct extensive research on the topic, using bibliographic references such as books, reliable websites, documentaries, as well as seeking professionals who can contribute with their insights and experiences, such as geographers, environmentalists, sociologists, among others.

The final product will be a multimedia presentation (can be in PowerPoint, Prezi, or similar) and a written report. The presentation should contain visual information, graphics, images, videos, among others, that illustrate their findings clearly and attractively. The report should follow the structure: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

Required Materials:

Students will need a computer with internet access for research and preparation of the presentation and report. In addition, students may choose to use other tools that help in the organization and execution of the project, such as paper, pen, post-its, etc.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

1. Group Formation: The class will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 students.
2. Research: Groups should start researching the Midwest region, its growth, deforestation of the Cerrado, and its biomes.
3. Analysis: After collecting information, students should analyze the data and information, highlighting the main problems and opportunities.
4. Preparation of the presentation and report: Based on the research and analysis, students will prepare a multimedia presentation and a written report.
5. Review and improvement: Before the final presentation, groups should review and improve their work, ensuring clear and objective communication.
6. Final Presentation: Groups will present their work to the class, followed by a question and answer session.

Project Deliverables:

Groups will present the results of their research in the form of a multimedia presentation and will also deliver a written report.

The report should follow the following structure:

• Introduction: The student must contextualize the theme, its relevance, and real-world application as well as the project's objective.
• Development: The student must explain the theory behind the central theme(s) of the project, explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.
• Conclusion: The student must summarize their main points, the learning obtained, and the conclusions drawn from the project.
• Bibliography: The student must indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

In the presentation, students must explain and show through graphs, images, and other visual resources the main discoveries made during the project.
