Contextualization

Imperialism refers us to a historical moment of the 19th and early 20th centuries, where emerging nations as world powers sought territorial expansion, in order to ensure access to natural resources, labor, consumer markets, and establish strategic trade routes. Among the regions targeted by these powers, Asia was a focus of interest, notably for its cultural diversity, natural riches, and strategic geographical positioning.

The Asian continent, rich in its culture and history, found itself face to face with the imperialist expansion of Western countries. Countries like India, China, and regions such as Southeast Asia and the Arabian Peninsula were profoundly transformed by this experience. The study of these processes allows us to understand the marks left by imperialism on the social, cultural, and political fabric of these nations, many of which are visible to this day.

Analyzing imperialism in Asia is to understand the dynamics that made this region a stage of geopolitical and economic influence and the lasting impacts that such a process left on the historical, social, and cultural formation of the countries, as well as allowing a reflection on how this history still reverberates in the current world geopolitical configuration.

This theme is of utmost importance for us to understand the dynamics of globalization, how the West established a power relationship with the East, and how it affected and still affects the political, economic, and social developments today.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Empire on Map: Asia under Imperialist Domination"

Project Objective:

To understand and analyze, through a playful and interactive activity, the process of imperialism in Asia in the 19th and early 20th centuries, identifying the imperialist countries, the colonized regions, the local impacts, and the resistances that occurred.

Detailed Project Description:

This activity consists of creating a playful-interactive map about the process of imperialism in Asia. Each group, composed of 3 to 5 students, will be responsible for researching, analyzing, and representing the imperialist countries and the Asian territories that were colonized, as well as the impacts of this process and the forms of resistance that occurred.

Required Materials:

• Large cardboard or card paper;
• Colorful pens;
• Printed or hand-drawn images to illustrate the map;
• Resources for research (books, videos, online articles, etc).

Step by Step:

1. Task Division: Group members must divide the tasks of research, development, and map assembly.

2. Research: Students should research the imperialist process in Asia, identifying the countries that practiced imperialism and the colonized regions.

3. Analysis: Students should analyze the impacts of imperialism in different regions of Asia and the forms of resistance that occurred.

4. Map Development: Based on the research conducted, the group should develop a playful-interactive map of Asia, representing the different imperialist countries and colonized regions, and indicating the impacts and resistances that occurred.

5. Presentation: Each group must present the work to the class, explaining the information represented on the map. Students should be prepared to answer questions from their classmates and the teacher.

6. Report Writing: After completing the map and the presentation, students should write a report.

The report should include:

• Introduction: Contextualize the project theme, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of the activity.
• Development: Describe the theory studied, the activities carried out, the methodology used, and the results obtained. Detail the map produced, explaining the choices made for the representation of information and the discussions they generated.
• Conclusion: Summarize the main points addressed in the project, highlight the learnings and conclusions drawn from the project.
• Bibliography: Indicate the research sources used by the students.

Project Deliverables:
