Contextualization

Our continent, Latin America, is marked by a rich and turbulent history. The pursuit of political autonomy and freedom from European colonization shaped the reality of our nations and directly influenced our culture, politics, economy, and society. Understanding the process of independence of Latin American nations is crucial to comprehend the formation of our identity and to help us think about our position in the world and our future choices.

The context of the 18th and early 19th centuries was marked by decisive international events that influenced the emancipation of our continent. Liberal revolutions, such as the French Revolution and the Independence of the United States, ignited the desire for freedom among Latin American colonies and equated the ideals of sovereignty and autonomy. These events served as a backdrop for independence, providing ideologies and strategies that were adopted by the leaders of the independence revolutions in Latin America.

In this project, we will deepen our knowledge about this fascinating period, where the struggle for equality, fraternity, and freedom intertwined with the challenges of national construction. The processes of independence in Latin America were not isolated events, but parts of a larger movement of self-assertion and resistance to colonialism that had its peculiarities in each region. Knowing the history of our independence is also knowing ourselves, our roots, and the construction of our identity.

Practical Activity: Independences in Latin America: A Tapestry of Identities

Project Objective

This project aims to provide students with a deep understanding of the independences in Latin America and the impact of these historical processes on the formation of national identities. In addition, students will enhance research skills, critical analysis, teamwork, oral and written presentation, and time management.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people, and each group will select two Latin American nations of their choice that went through independence processes. For example, Brazil and Mexico, Argentina and Chile, Peru and Bolivia, etc.

Groups should research the following topics:

1. The context before independence of each nation (Politics, Economy, Society, and Culture).
2. The independence process and its main figures.
3. External influences on independence (French Revolution, Independence of the USA, etc.).
4. The formation of national identity after independence.
5. The consequences of independence for the nation and the region.

Required Materials

• Access to resources such as books, academic articles, reliable research websites, informative videos, maps, graphics, and other visual learning tools.
• Paper, pencils, markers, and other materials for note-taking and creating schemes.
• Presentation equipment: computer, projector, flipchart, among others.

Step by Step

1. Group division and selection of nations to be researched.
2. Research on the pre-independence context of each nation.
3. Research on the independence process and its main figures.
4. Research on external influences on independence.
5. Research on the formation of national identity after independence.
6. Research on the consequences of independence for the nation and the region.
7. Discussion and analysis of research results for each nation.
8. Preparation of the presentation: creation of slides, visual schemes, presentation script, etc.
9. Presentation rehearsal.
10. Presentation to the class.
11. Discussion and feedback after the presentation.

Submission

Each group, in addition to the presentation, must write a detailed document in the form of a report, containing: introduction, development (with all researched and analyzed information, methodology used, and results obtained), conclusions, and bibliography used.

The introduction should contextualize the independence in Latin America, the relevance of the topic, and the choice of the two nations to be analyzed. In the development, students should address all five researched topics, explain the research methodology used, and discuss the results and conclusions obtained. Finally, in the conclusion, students should summarize the main points of their research, reflect on what they have learned, and draw conclusions about the topic and the project. The bibliography should follow the appropriate citation standards and include all sources used during the project.

This document must be submitted along with the oral presentation of the group and will be used for the evaluation of the project as a whole.
