Mathematics is a universal language and through it, we can understand various phenomena around us. In this sense, the study of 'Figures of Revolution' presents itself as a fascinating path to the understanding of different structures present in our daily lives. This concept is essential to understand how certain objects have their space and shape defined and how they interact with the environment around them.

In general terms, figures of revolution are obtained by rotating a flat figure around an axis. Practical examples of this are everywhere: the lens of a telescope, the wine glass we use to celebrate special moments, a flower vase, a PET bottle, and even the shape of our planet, among many others. We use and interact with these figures constantly, without realizing how much mathematics is involved in their conception.

Activity Title: Building and exploring figures of revolution

Project Objective

With the help of recyclable materials, students will create their own figures of revolution, and using the mathematical concepts learned, they will estimate and calculate their respective volumes and areas. Through the practical experiment, it is expected that students can visualize and understand the concepts of figures of revolution more effectively.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will choose a figure of revolution to create: cone, cylinder, or sphere. In addition to constructing the figure, students must perform volume and area calculations, make observations, draw conclusions, and write a detailed report on the group learning process.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard, papier-mâché, or clay for creating the figures.
  • Ruler, tape measure, or measuring tape for measurements.
  • Calculator.
  • Paper and pen for notes.

Activity Step-by-Step

  1. Project Definition: Each group will choose a figure of revolution to build and will be responsible for researching, designing, building, and measuring the chosen figure.
  2. Research and Planning: Groups should research the chosen figure, understand how it is defined, and how to calculate its volume and area. They should plan how they will build the figure and what materials they will use.
  3. Figure Construction: Using the available materials, groups will build their figure of revolution. It is important that they do this meticulously, ensuring that the figure is as accurate as possible.
  4. Measurement: After constructing the figure, groups will take measurements of relevant dimensions (height, radius, diameter) for volume and area calculations.
  5. Calculation: Using the obtained measurements and the previously researched formulas, students will perform the volume and area calculations of the figure.
  6. Report Writing: Finally, each group must elaborate a detailed report describing the entire process carried out.

Project Deliverables

Groups must deliver two main artifacts:

  1. The built figure of revolution.
  2. The written report.

Report

The report should follow the suggested format with the following topics:

  1. Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, relevance and real-world application, project objectives.
  2. Development: Description of the project's central theory, detailing of the activities carried out, methodology used, and discussion of the results obtained.
  3. Conclusion: Recapitulation of the main points, lessons learned, and project conclusions.
  4. Bibliography: Indication of the sources on which they based the project, books, web pages, videos, etc.

The report should be written to complement the practical work carried out. In it, students should describe in detail the process of constructing the figure, the measurements and calculations performed, as well as compare the practical results with the theoretical ones of the figure of revolution model. The obstacles encountered, as well as the solutions found, should also be discussed to demonstrate teamwork and the socio-emotional skills developed.
