Context

The ability to understand data is one of the most important skills for the 21st century. We are constantly bombarded with information on a daily basis, much of which is presented in the form of graphs and charts. Knowing how to read, interpret, and critique this information is essential for making informed decisions in all aspects of life, from personal to professional.

Data visualization, such as graphs and charts, plays a critical role in our society. They help us understand and communicate the complexities inherent in the information we receive, transforming raw data into meaningful insights. As such, it is imperative that we become literate in their use.

Theoretical Introduction

Graphs and charts are visual tools used to represent and organize data to ease our understanding of it. There are multiple different types of graphs and charts, each with its own unique characteristics and best uses. For example, bar graphs are used to compare quantities of different categories, while line graphs are better suited to showing trends over time.

A histogram is a type of graph that shows the frequency of occurrence of a given dataset, divided into ranges. It is a great tool for visualizing data distributions and is easy to glance at and understand. A stem-and-leaf plot, on the other hand, preserves the original numerical data and can be used to see the shape of the data distribution in a similar way to a histogram.

Finally, we have the box plot, which is a method for graphically depicting groups of numerical data through their quartiles. It provides a visual representation of the data distribution and symmetry, allowing for the identification of potential outliers.

Activity

Activity Title: Deciphering Data - Deep Dive Into Graphs and Charts

Project Goal:

The aim of this project is to provide students with the opportunity to engage with real-world data, represent it using different graph and chart formats, and ultimately interpret and critique the information presented. This will enhance students' understanding of the different types, characteristics, and applications of graphs and charts, while also developing essential skills such as teamwork, critical thinking, and decision making.

Detailed Project Description:

Each group of 3-5 students will be responsible for selecting a real-world dataset on a topic of their choice (e.g., monthly temperatures, Olympic medal counts, sales of a product per month, etc.). Students will then represent this data using at least three different types of graphs and charts (histogram, box plot, and stem-and-leaf plot are suggested). Finally, students will produce a written report explaining their choices and interpreting the data visualized in the graphs and charts.

Required Materials:

  • Computer with internet access
  • Graphing software (Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or design software)
  • Paper and pens for brainstorming and planning
  • Online tutorials and guides for reference

Step-by-Step Instructions for Activity:

1. Topic Selection and Data Collection: Each group selects a topic on which they would like to collect data. Students should research and gather relevant data for their chosen topic.

2. Data Representation: Using the software of their choice, students create different types of graphs and charts to represent the data they have collected. It is important for students to think carefully about which type of graph or chart is most appropriate for effectively representing their data.

3. Interpretation and Critique: Students analyze the graphs and charts they have created, interpreting the data and making meaningful critical observations.

4. Report: Each group produces a detailed report of their project, explaining the choices they made, interpreting the data collected and visualized, and offering critique and insights based on their representations. This report should include the following sections: introduction, method, results, discussion, and references.

Project Deliverables and Written Document Structure:

The final project will consist of two main components:

  1. Graphs and Charts: The different graphs and charts created by the groups to represent their collected data.

  2. Report: A written document explaining the choices the students made, interpreting and critiquing the data visualized in the graphs and charts. This document should follow the structure outlined below:

  • Introduction: In this section, students should provide a brief description of the topic they chose and their rationale for choosing it. They should also highlight the relevance of their topic in a contemporary context and discuss the overall aim of their project.

  • Methods: In this section, students should explain the theory behind the different types of graphs and charts used, detail the process of data collection, their choice of graphing software, and the methodology used to create each representation. Students should then present each graph/chart created, discussing why this form of representation was chosen and what insights it reveals about the data.

  • Results: This section should revisit the main points of the report, highlighting what was learned through the activity, any challenges or surprises encountered during the execution of the project, and what conclusions can be drawn from the data collected and represented.

  • Discussion: Here, students should tie together the results of their project with the initial aims and objectives, discussing the implications of their findings and suggesting areas for further research or exploration.

  • References: Here, students should list all sources that they consulted in order to complete the project, including data sources, books, websites, videos, etc.

The completed work should be submitted to the instructor within one week of the project deadline.
