Statistics: Mode and Median

Background

The median is one of the most well-known and used measures of central tendency in statistics. It is a number that separates the higher half of a sample, population, or dataset from the lower half. Understanding and applying the median makes it easier to understand and analyze a dataset, making it an essential tool for solving everyday questions, developing market strategies, and producing scientific research.

As a measure of centrality, the median is less sensitive to extreme values and outliers than the average, meaning it is a more robust measure. This means that even if we have very different values in our sample, the median will not be greatly impacted, ensuring a more "centralized" view of the data.

In addition, the median has a close relationship with probability concepts and the normal distribution of data, or the so-called "bell curve". The median, along with the mode and the mean, are measures that help us understand the distribution of our data, and it is through them that we can adequately interpret a variety of situations.

Importance of the Median

The median has wide practical application. It is used to determine the "average age" of a given population, the "average income" of the inhabitants of a city, or the "typical" performance of a student in a class, for example. In all these situations, the median offers a more "real" measure than the average, because it is less affected by outliers, or values that deviate greatly from the others.

In addition, the median is also widely used in the research area, being an indispensable tool for researchers. In analyzing research data, it can help to study phenomena and draw conclusions about the behavior of certain variables. The understanding of the median is directly related to the work of professionals who use statistics in their work routine, such as engineers, economists, psychologists, and health professionals, for example.

Practical Activity: "Exploring the Median"

Activity Title

"Median in Action: An empirical analysis of income distribution"

Project Objective

This project aims to analyze the distribution of income in different regions of the country using the median as the main tool. In addition, the project aims to develop technical and socio-emotional skills, such as teamwork, problem solving, creative thinking, and time management.

Detailed Project Description

Each group of 3 to 5 students will be responsible for analyzing the income distribution of a region of Brazil. To this end, students should research official data on the income of the inhabitants of these regions (such as the IBGE), calculate the medians, and analyze how these medians behave in relation to each population studied.

Students should also correlate this analysis with other relevant socioeconomic variables (such as literacy rate, unemployment rate, homicide rate, etc.), in order to draw conclusions about the influence of income distribution on the sociocultural and economic development of the regions.

The final result will be the delivery of a complete research report, including all calculations performed, graphs generated, and analysis done, in addition to a group presentation for the class.

Required Materials

  • Computer with internet access
  • Spreadsheet software (Excel, Google Sheets, etc.)
  • Official documents with socioeconomic data

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Forming groups and choosing the region to be studied
  2. Research and collection of socioeconomic data from the chosen region
  3. Calculation of the medians of the income distribution
  4. Analysis of the correlation between the median income and other socioeconomic variables
  5. Preparation of the research report, including all calculations performed, analysis done, and graphs generated
  6. Preparation and presentation of the work to the class

Deliverables and Connections with the Activities

The final product of this project will be a detailed research report and a group presentation. The report should be done in the following format:

Introduction

Start the report by presenting the chosen region and its general socioeconomic characteristics. Then, explain the importance of studying income distribution and how the median can contribute to this analysis.

Development

Detail the entire research process, from data collection to calculation of medians and analysis of correlations. Be sure to include all steps taken, as well as show the calculations and graphs.

Conclusions

Describe the main conclusions of the research. What was the impact of studying the median on understanding income distribution in the region? What is the relationship between income and the other socioeconomic variables analyzed?

Bibliography

List all sources used during the research, including official documents with socioeconomic data.

The group presentation should summarize the main points of the report, and each member of the group should participate by talking about part of the work. This project will have a duration of 3 weeks.
