Contextualization

Geometry plays a significant role in various professions and everyday situations. Architects use it when designing buildings, graphic designers when creating logos and animations, and artists when making portraits. In all these situations, a fundamental concept is that of front views. They are a way to see a three-dimensional object on a two-dimensional surface, facilitating the understanding of its dimensions and structure.

Front views are used in many sectors, including engineering, architecture, design, and art. They are involved in the entire product design process, construction planning, and even in game development. By learning about front views, you are not only gaining a mathematical skill but also empowering yourself for a wide range of creative and technical careers.

Theoretical Introduction

Front views are a method of geometric representation that shows an object as if it were being viewed from a frontal perspective, usually perpendicular to its face. They ignore perspective and distortion, assuming that all parts of the object are equally distant from the viewpoint.

The second key concept in this project is data analysis through graphs and diagrams. By collecting and analyzing data, it is possible to make comparisons, identify trends, and draw conclusions. Diagrams and graphs are the most efficient ways to present and interpret large amounts of information.

Finally, we will address calculations of areas and lengths in front views. This is especially useful in practical fields such as engineering and architecture, where these measurements are used to determine the amount of material needed or to calculate the size of a space in a project.

Activity

Activity Title: "From 3D Image to Front View: A Study of Geometry and Data"

Project Objective

This project aims to provide students with a better understanding of how front views are used to represent three-dimensional objects, how to interpret and analyze data sets in the form of graphs and diagrams, and how to perform calculations of areas and lengths in these front views.

Detailed Project Description

Students should choose an everyday object, such as furniture or an appliance, and create a two-dimensional representation of that object, which will be the front view. They should calculate the area and length of each part of the front view. Next, students will collect data on the amount of material needed for each part of the object and represent it through graphs and diagrams. Finally, they will interpret and analyze the represented data.

Required Materials

  • A three-dimensional object (can be a toy, a utensil, etc.)
  • Paper and pencil
  • Ruler or tape measure
  • Calculator
  • Graph creation software (such as Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets)

Activity Steps

  1. Form a group of 3 to 5 students and choose a three-dimensional object to analyze.
  2. Analyze the object from different perspectives and decide which one will be considered the "front view".
  3. Draw a two-dimensional representation of the front view of the object on paper.
  4. Use the ruler or tape measure to measure the parts of the object, recording the measurements in a table.
  5. Calculate the area and length of each part of the front view.
  6. Collect data on the amount of material needed for each part of the object.
  7. Use graph creation software to present the collected data in different types of graphs (histogram, box plot, stem-and-leaf, among others).
  8. Interpret and analyze the data represented in the graphs.

Project Deliverables

  • Drawing of the front view of the object.

  • Table with measurements and calculations of the area and length of each part of the front view.

  • Graphs and diagrams with the data collected about the object.

  • A written report containing:

    • Introduction: Description of the chosen object, relevance of studying front views, and project objectives.
    • Development: Detailed steps performed, from choosing the front view, calculating area and length, to data collection and graph creation. Additionally, in this section, they should explain about the theory of front views, the importance of graphical interpretation, and calculations of area and length in front views.
    • Conclusions: Reflections on the results obtained, acquired learning, and the importance of teamwork. Additionally, students should express their conclusions about the analysis of the collected data.
    • Bibliography: References to the materials used throughout the project (books, websites, videos, etc.).

At the end of the project, students should be able to interpret and compare statistical data sets through different diagrams and graphs, recognize and draw front views, calculate areas and lengths of front views, and improve their socio-emotional skills such as time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, proactivity, etc.
