Statistics: Sample Surveys

Contextualization

Sampling surveys are methods used in many fields and situations to obtain information about the population as a whole without having to analyze each of its elements. Its application is vast, from determining public opinion on political issues to identifying market trends or even evaluating the effectiveness of a medical treatment. They are powerful and essential statistical tools in our increasingly data-driven world.

One of the fundamental concepts in sampling surveys is the definition of a sample. A sample is a subset of the population that is representative of the whole. For a sample to be effective, it must be selected in a way that each member of the population has an equal chance of being included. This is known as simple random sampling.

Another key concept is the idea of statistical inference. This involves using the sample data to make statements about the population. For example, you could use a sample of students to make a statement about the average grade of the student body in a school. Understanding these ideas is crucial for the effective use of sampling surveys.

In the real world, sampling surveys play a vital role in decision-making and policy formulation. For example, before an election, research institutes conduct surveys to determine public opinion on the candidates. This informs the candidate's strategy and gives the public an idea of who might win. In the health field, sampling surveys can be used to determine the effectiveness of a treatment or to study the prevalence of a disease. In the business sector, companies use surveys to understand the needs and preferences of their customers.

Therefore, understanding the impact and importance of sampling surveys in our lives, it is essential to deepen the study on this topic. For this, students can use as a base material the book 'Estatística Básica' by Wilton Bussab and Pedro Morettin, as well as consult online content on sampling surveys on the IBGE website. In addition, the Khan Academy website offers a series of videos on the subject that can be useful to delve into the topic.

Practical Activity - 'Our Voice Within the Sample'

Project Title

Sampling Survey: Our Favorite Ice Cream Flavor

Project Objective

The objective of the project is to understand how a sampling survey can be conducted and evaluated, putting into practice the concepts of random sampling, statistical inference, and measures of dispersion. The proposed theme is the favorite ice cream flavor of the school students.

Detailed Project Description

Each group of 3 to 5 students should conduct a sampling survey to determine the most popular ice cream flavor among the high school students. The groups will plan the survey, conduct the interviews, collect and analyze the data, communicate the results, and reflect on the process. The project should last one week, so each student should dedicate two to four hours to it.

Necessary Materials

  • Material for recording responses (can be a notebook, tablet, smartphone)
  • Calculators for calculating measures of central tendency and dispersion
  • Electronic spreadsheet program (Excel, Google Sheets) or some statistical processing software
  • Writing material for preparing the report (can be digital)

Detailed Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity

  1. Plan the survey: define how to obtain the sample, the sample size, and the interview method.
  2. Conduct the Survey: randomly select the students to be interviewed and ask about their favorite ice cream flavor.
  3. Record the data: write down the responses, indicating the student's number and the chosen ice cream flavor.
  4. Analyze the data: calculate the measures of central tendency (mode, mean, median) and dispersion (range, standard deviation). Create a graph representing the data.
  5. Communicate the results: prepare a presentation of the results, indicating the most popular ice cream flavor and discussing the measures of central tendency and dispersion.
  6. Write the final report: prepare the document in the format of a report containing: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

The report should be written to complement the practical activity. It should include an explanation of the sampling survey concept, a description of the planning and execution process of the survey, the presentation and analysis of the results, and the conclusions drawn. The bibliography should be cited correctly, according to ABNT standards.

Project Deliverables

The groups should deliver:

  1. The final report in the form of a digital document, containing: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.
  2. A digital presentation (slides) of the survey results.
  3. The collected data and the calculators used in the data analysis, in a digital spreadsheet or similar.

Each stage of the project is connected to the next: survey planning leads to data collection, which in turn leads to data analysis. Presenting the results and preparing the final report are an opportunity for students to reflect on what they have learned and communicate their findings.
