Swimming

Context

Swimming is considered one of the most complete sports, as it works various muscles and joints of the human body. Besides being used as physical activity, it is a sport that provides well-being, mental balance, and is essential for our survival, as knowing how to swim can prevent aquatic accidents.

The history of the sport is also quite rich. Swimming has been part of human history since antiquity, with records dating back to ancient Egypt and the civilizations of Mesopotamia, where aquatic skill competitions were held. It is one of the oldest sports practices and has been part of the Modern Olympic Games since its first edition in 1896.

Swimming is also important for Brazil. Besides being a highly popular sport, we have renowned athletes who have excelled worldwide. Furthermore, its teaching is essential for the safety of the population, as we are a country with a vast coastal extension and numerous rivers and reservoirs.

We suggest the following sources for research in this project:

  • Mark Spitz's books, "A Ouro Puro" and "The Complete Book of Swimming", both written by one of the greatest names in world swimming.
  • The Swim Channel website (https://swimchannel.net), which provides a large amount of didactic material about swimming, including articles and videos.
  • The digital magazine "Swimming World Magazine" (https://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com), in English, with articles and reports on techniques, training, and competitions.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Discovering Swimming: Styles, History, and Application"

Project Objective

This project aims to allow students to gain a deep understanding of key concepts, modalities, and history of swimming, as well as to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical context. Students will also work on their socio-emotional skills, such as time management, communication, and teamwork.

Project Description

The project will be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students and will last for one month. Each group will be responsible for researching and presenting swimming styles, the history of swimming, and conducting a practical activity.

The swimming styles to be researched include: freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, and medley. Each group should understand the techniques, benefits, and difficulties of each style.

The historical research should include the main milestones and evolutions of the sport, as well as notable athletes.

The practical activity will involve the application of the studied theoretical concepts in practice. Students can choose to perform a demonstration of one of the swimming styles, create a video tutorial explaining the appropriate technique for a specific style, or develop a training plan for a swimming style.

Required Materials

  • Books and online resources about swimming
  • Access to a swimming pool for the practical activity (optional)
  • Filming equipment (if choosing to create a video tutorial)
  • Writing materials for the report

Step by Step

  1. Form groups and assign swimming styles to each group.
  2. Conduct general research on swimming and the assigned swimming style.
  3. Plan and carry out the practical activity, documenting the process.
  4. Write a detailed report containing the research and the results of the practical activity.

The deliverables of this project include the presentation of the research conducted and the practical activity, as well as a detailed written report. The presentation can be done orally or through a slideshow, including images, videos, and illustrations to aid in the understanding of the studied concepts.

In the report, the Introduction should contain the contextualization of the sport of swimming, its relevance, and an explanation of the project's objective. The Development should include the theory learned, a detailed description of the practical activity carried out, the methodology used, and a discussion of the results obtained. The Conclusion should summarize the main points addressed, describe the learnings acquired, and draw conclusions about the project. Finally, the Bibliography should list all sources used for the research.

It is up to the group to decide on the division of tasks for the report, but everyone should participate in both the research process and the practical activity.
