Electricity: Work of Electric Force in Uniform Fields

Context

The world around us is filled with a vast array of scientific elements and phenomena that often go unnoticed in our daily lives. Among them, electric force stands out as one of the fundamental pillars for the functioning of modern society. From waking up to the sound of the radio alarm clock to turning off the bedroom light at the end of the day, we are constantly immersed in activities that depend on electricity.

Physics, the science that seeks to understand natural phenomena, provides us with the tool to unravel the mystery of electricity - electric fields. The concept of an electric field allows us to understand how electric charges interact with each other, without the need for direct physical contact. The starting point for this understanding lies in the analysis of electric force and the work done by it in a uniform field - the central topic of this project.

Electric fields are present in various contexts, from natural phenomena like lightning in a storm to technological applications such as the operation of a particle accelerator. However, the relevance of electric fields is not limited to these examples alone. Cell phones, computers, household appliances, electric cars, all these technologies that are part of our daily lives depend, directly or indirectly, on the control and manipulation of electric fields.

For this project, we suggest some resources that can help you delve deeper into this fascinating physics universe. The book "Physics for Scientists and Engineers: Volume 2" by author Paul A. Tipler is an excellent source to address the theory of electric fields and the work of electric force. Additionally, the YouTube channel "Ciência em Ação" has a playlist dedicated to Electromagnetism that can be useful to better understand these concepts. Finally, the website "Brasil Escola" offers a series of articles on the topic that can serve as a good foundation for the project.

Practical Activity - Construction and Analysis of a Uniform Electric Field

Project Objective

To understand the concept of electric force and work in this context, through the modeling of a uniform electric field and the analysis of its influence on a point charge inserted in this environment.

Project Description

The groups will be responsible for creating a uniform electric field using a ruler, graph paper, adhesive tape, a crayon, two acrylic plates, erasers, and a Van de Graaff generator. Once created, the group must analyze the interaction of a small charged sphere with the electric field, using the equation of electric force, to finally be able to calculate the work done by this force.

Required Materials

  • Ruler
  • Graph paper
  • Adhesive tape
  • Crayon
  • Two acrylic plates
  • Erasers
  • Van de Graaff generator
  • Small metallic sphere

Step by Step

  1. Students should draw a 20 cm x 30 cm rectangle on the graph paper using the crayon.
  2. Use the adhesive tape to secure the paper on the table.
  3. Place the acrylic plates, one on each side, along the lines of the rectangle.
  4. Use the erasers to slightly elevate the acrylic plates.
  5. With the help of the Van de Graaff generator, charge the acrylic plates, one with a positive charge and the other with a negative charge, to create a uniform electric field.
  6. Place the metallic sphere in the electric field and observe its movement.
  7. Use the equation of electric force to calculate the force applied to the sphere.
  8. Calculate the work done by the electric force when moving the sphere.

Project Delivery

The group must prepare a detailed report on the experiment. The document should contain sections of introduction, development, conclusion, and bibliography.

  1. Introduction: Provide context on the concept of electric field and electric force, and explain their importance and application. Discuss the project's objective.

  2. Development: Describe in detail the steps taken in the experiment. Address the theory of uniform electric field and electric force, explaining how these concepts apply to the activity performed. Present the calculations made and the results obtained.

  3. Conclusion: Summarize the main points of the project, discuss what was learned from the experiment, and reflect on the results obtained and the difficulties encountered.

  4. Bibliography: List the research sources used for the project's development.

Students should learn the importance of the electric field and electric force, how to calculate the work done by this force, and the practical applications of this concept.
