Volumetric Expansion

Context

Volumetric expansion is a fundamental concept in the study of Physics, particularly in the field of Thermodynamics. It is a form of expansion that occurs in solids, liquids, and gases when their temperature increases. Let's imagine for a moment that you have a party balloon inflated with air. What happens if you take it to a warmer environment?

If you said that the balloon will expand, you are absolutely correct. But why does this happen? This occurs due to volumetric expansion. When the gas temperature inside the balloon increases, the gas expands, causing the balloon to expand as well. This is the type of phenomenon that can be explained by volumetric expansion, and it is an important concept that allows us to explain many everyday phenomena.

The importance of volumetric expansion

Volumetric expansion plays a crucial role in many areas of science and technology. For example, in civil engineering, it is important to take into account volumetric expansion in the construction of bridges and buildings to prevent cracks and structural deformations caused by temperature changes.

In metallurgy, volumetric expansion is a key factor in the metal forging process. In medicine, volumetric expansion is responsible for allowing mercury thermometers to function. In our daily lives, we see examples of volumetric expansion when preparing a meal in the kitchen. For example, water boils at a lower temperature at higher altitudes due to volumetric expansion.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Dilated Balloons: A Practical Approach to Volumetric Expansion

Project Objective:

The main objective of this project is to enhance the understanding of volumetric expansion concepts through a practical experience involving balloons, hot and cold water. Additionally, it aims to develop

  1. Technical skills: Solve problems involving the expansion of bodies, specifically the expansion in three dimensions of an object.
  2. Socio-emotional skills: Teamwork, time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, proactivity, among others.

Detailed Project Description:

The activity consists of conducting a practical experiment to observe volumetric expansion in action. Groups of 3 to 5 students will fill balloons with hot and cold air, observe the difference in expansion, and then analyze the results, seeking to establish a relationship with the theory of volumetric expansion.

Required Materials:

  1. Latex balloons (2 per group)
  2. Container large enough to submerge a balloon
  3. Hot and cold water
  4. Thermostat or thermometer
  5. Measuring tape or ruler.

Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity:

Step 1: Each group should inflate two balloons until they are approximately the same size, measuring the diameter of each one to record in the report.

Step 2: Submerge one of the balloons in hot water and the other in cold water, observe and record the changes in the size of the balloons.

Step 3: After approximately five minutes, remove the balloons from the water and measure their diameter again. Record these measurements.

Step 4: Analyze the results, discussing as a group the changes in the volume of the balloons and how they relate to the water temperature.

Step 5: Create a detailed written report on the experience, following the instructions below.

Project Deliverables:

After completing the practical part of the project, students must write a detailed report, following the topics below:

  1. Introduction: The theme should be contextualized, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.

  2. Development: Detail the experience, including the methodology used and the results obtained, correlating the theory of volumetric expansion with the practical results.

  3. Conclusion: Summarize the main points, explaining the learnings obtained and the conclusions drawn from the project.

  4. Bibliography: Indicate the sources used to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

The report must be presented within a week after the practical experience. Each group member must contribute equally to the elaboration of the report, and the division of work must be recorded and justified in the text of the report.
