Electricity: Electric Current

Context

Electric current is an ordered flow of electrons that passes through a conductor when there is a potential difference between different points of that conductor. It is a fundamental concept in physics and is responsible for the operation of a wide variety of devices we use daily.

Electric current is generated when an electrical circuit is closed, allowing electrons to move freely. The free movement of electrons generates energy that can be used in various applications. This includes household electrical appliances such as refrigerators and light bulbs, as well as electronic devices such as smartphones and laptops.

Importance and Applications of Knowledge

Our world is powered by electric current. It is essential for the operation of almost all the devices we use in our daily lives. Furthermore, understanding electric current is fundamental for the generation of electrical energy, which is the main source of energy for our homes and cities.

Electric current also has important applications in medicine, where it is used in a type of therapy called electrotherapy. This therapy uses electric current to stimulate muscles and nerves, treat pain, and promote healing. Another application of electric current is in electric vehicles, which are becoming increasingly common as a more environmentally friendly alternative to gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Energy at Your Fingertips

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to apply the acquired knowledge about electric current to create a small-scale electrical energy production device: a homemade mini electric generator. In addition, students should make connections from this project to Chemistry concepts, particularly electrochemical reactions.

Project Description

Groups should conduct a detailed study of electric current, its concepts, characteristics, and applications. Based on this, they will apply this knowledge to build a homemade mini electric generator that can, for example, light up a small LED bulb. Simultaneously, students should conduct a parallel study on electrochemical reactions to adequately explain the generation of electric current in their generator.

Required Materials:

  1. Enamelled copper wires
  2. Small neodymium magnets
  3. Small LED bulb
  4. Cardboard or plastic support
  5. Battery
  6. Sandpaper

Step by Step

  1. Wind the copper wire around a cylinder (like a toilet paper roll) about 200 times, leaving a 10 cm end on each side.

  2. Remove the insulation layer from the wire ends with sandpaper.

  3. On the cardboard or plastic support, attach the neodymium magnets.

  4. Place the coil of copper wire over the magnets in a way that it can rotate freely.

  5. Connect one end of the wire to the LED bulb and the other end to the battery. The LED bulb should light up when the coil of wire rotates over the magnets.

  6. Document the entire process, showing the construction steps and explaining the theory behind each step.

Project Deliverables

In addition to delivering the mini electric generator, groups must submit a written report following the previous guidelines (Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography). This report should:

  1. Provide context on the importance of electric current and electrochemical reactions in everyday life and industrial applications.

  2. Explain in detail the theory behind the generation of electric current and electrochemical reactions.

  3. Describe step by step the construction of the mini electric generator, with photos or videos to help explain the process.

  4. Discuss the results, including any problems or challenges encountered and how they were resolved.

  5. Present conclusions about the project, including what was learned and how theoretical concepts were applied in practice.

The key to a good report is the interconnection of theoretical concepts with practical observations, the clarity of explanations, and the proper use of sources of information.
