Contextualization

Resistors are components that have the ability to resist the passage of electrical energy. Our homes and electronic devices are full of resistors, making them an essential part of the electricity in the world we live in. This project will focus on resistors in series and how they behave.

Imagine a situation where you want to control the brightness of a light bulb in your home. One possible solution would be to use a resistor to reduce the current passing through the bulb, causing it to shine less intensely. If the bulb is shining less intensely, it means that less energy is being consumed, making the solution not only effective but also energy-efficient.

Introduction

Resistors in series form a configuration where each resistor is connected in a single path for the current to flow, meaning the current passing through one resistor is the same passing through the others. Resistors in series are common in many practical applications, such as in cellphone charger circuits and other devices that need a specific electric current to function properly.

When working with resistors in series, it is essential to understand Ohm's first and second laws. The first law, also known as Ohm's law, states that the current passing through a material is directly proportional to the applied voltage and inversely proportional to the material's resistance. The second law of Ohm is used to calculate the resistance in a series circuit, which is the sum of the individual resistances.

This project will allow us to practically and deeply explore the combination of resistors in series, their properties, and practical applications. Understanding these concepts is of vital importance for those who wish to enter the vast field of Physics, but it is also fundamental for anyone who wants to better understand how electricity works in our daily lives.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Energy in Series

Project Objective

To put into practice the theory about resistors in series and enhance teamwork and problem-solving skills.

Detailed Project Description

Groups will assemble a series circuit with different resistors, measuring and recording the electric current and voltage in each of them. The goal is to apply the theory learned in the classroom to predict the results, confirm their predictions experimentally, and finally reflect on their findings.

Required Materials

  1. Resistors of different resistances
  2. Conductive wires
  3. Power source (batteries)
  4. Multimeter
  5. Data recording table
  6. Pencil and paper

Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Discuss how the series circuit should be assembled and what results they expect, based on the theory learned.
  3. Assemble the series circuit, starting with one resistor and gradually increasing.
  4. Measure and record the current and voltage in each resistor using the multimeter.
  5. Repeat step 4 for each new resistor added to the circuit.
  6. Compare the results obtained with the predictions made initially and discuss possible reasons for any discrepancies.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group must prepare a report with the following sections:

  1. Introduction: Describe the experiment in your own words. Explain the relevance and application of resistors in series in the real world and the purpose of this project.

  2. Development: Detail the circuit assembly process, the predictions made, and the results obtained. Indicate the methodology used to collect and analyze the data and discuss the results. Include the filled table with measurements and resistances.

  3. Conclusion: Go back to the main points of the work, explain what was learned, and draw conclusions about the project. Report how the project helped to better understand the theory of resistors in series and how it applies to the real world.

  4. Bibliography: List the sources of information that were used to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

Remember, the idea of the project is to practice the theory in a real environment, while learning to work in a team and manage time, improving communication and problems solving skills.
