Contextualization

Expansion - a theme that may not be very common in our daily lives, but that defines the functioning of many everyday situations. This scientific concept is closely related to temperature changes. Whether it's the heat of summer or the cold of winter, the objects around us undergo expansion or contraction because of it.

To better understand, let's talk about the phenomenon of liquid expansion. Simplifying, expansion is the process in which an object increases in size due to an increase in temperature. And liquids, due to their fluid nature, have a very interesting property: they are much more sensitive to temperature variations when compared to solid materials.

Theoretical Introduction

Liquid expansion is a physical phenomenon that occurs when the temperature of a liquid increases. With the increase in temperature, the particles that make up the liquid agitate and occupy a larger area within the container, thus causing the liquid to expand.

Bringing the relationship with containers into the conversation, we can say that normally, the liquid tends to expand more than the container. Understanding the reason for this is an important part of our study, as well as understanding that some liquids expand more than others.

Now, bringing a more mathematical view to the topic, we have the volumetric expansion coefficient of liquids. This coefficient helps us determine how much a liquid will expand or contract due to a change in its temperature.

Relevance of the Topic

The expansion of liquids and their containers is an extremely relevant topic and present in various everyday situations. It is at the base of the technology of mercury thermometers, steam engines, and even in industrial processes of packaging food and beverages.

Furthermore, it is a fundamental concept to understand climate change and its impact on the oceans. The expansion of the oceans due to global warming is one of the main causes of the rise in sea levels, a growing problem for many coastal countries around the world.

Because it is a very relevant subject that can be easily observed in practice, we believe it is extremely important for you, students, to delve into it.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Experimenting with Expansion: Liquids in Focus"

Project Objective

Learn about the expansion of liquids in containers, their variation with temperature, and how different liquids can have distinct behaviors. Additionally, develop skills in teamwork, handling practical experiments, conducting data analysis, and scientific writing.

Detailed Project Description

The activity consists of conducting an experiment to test the expansion of different liquids in containers as the temperature increases. Each group will choose three types of liquids (water, oil, and alcohol, for example) and compare their expansions in identical containers under the same temperature variation.

Required Materials

  • Three identical glass containers (e.g., glass jars)
  • Three thermometers
  • Three different types of liquids
  • A controllable heat source (e.g., a stove)
  • Tools to measure liquid volume (e.g., a graduated cylinder)
  • Protective gloves and safety goggles

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Each group of students must choose three different types of liquids.
  2. Measure and record the room temperature and initial volume of each liquid in their respective containers.
  3. Slowly heat each container with the liquid on the same heat source.
  4. Measure and record the temperature and volume of the liquid at each time interval (e.g., every 5 minutes).
  5. Continue step 4 until the liquid temperature no longer increases, or until a predefined time limit (not exceeding 30 minutes to ensure safety).
  6. Turn off the heat source and let the containers cool to room temperature. Measure and record the temperature and volume at this point.
  7. Tabulate and analyze the data obtained.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group must submit a report containing:

  • Introduction: Briefly explaining the theory of liquid expansion and the purpose of the experiment.
  • Methodology: Describing in detail how the experiment was conducted, including the materials used, the steps taken, the measurements made, and the precautions taken.
  • Data Analysis: Presenting the collected data in tables and/or graphs and describing the observed patterns.
  • Conclusions: Discussing what was learned from the experiment, how the results relate to the theory of liquid expansion, and possible sources of error.
  • Bibliography: References to all resources used in the preparation and execution of the experiment.

The submissions should demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of expansion and their practical applications, as well as teamwork, planning, execution, and analysis of experiments, and scientific communication skills.
