Electricity: Capacitors in Series

Contextualization

Capacitors are devices with the ability to store electric charges. They are essential for the operation of numerous electronic devices we use in our daily lives, from cell phones to medical diagnostic equipment. When connected in series, these devices exhibit interesting properties that will be the focus of our project.

The capacitance of a capacitor is measured by its capacitance, which is a relationship between the stored charge and the potential difference (voltage) between its plates. When capacitors are connected in series, the resulting capacitance is given by a specific formula. Learning to use this formula and understanding the implications of this series arrangement is essential to understand the operation of many electronic devices.

Importance and Applications

Capacitors play an essential role in regulating and controlling current in many electronic devices, acting as charge reservoirs. For example, they can be used to smooth the output of a power supply or to eliminate high-frequency noise in a power line. When connected in series, these devices can achieve lower capacitance values, or withstand higher voltages without failing.

Capacitors in series are also used in audio systems, such as speakers. In these systems, they can serve as low-pass filters, blocking higher frequencies and allowing only the lower ones. Therefore, becoming familiar with how capacitors in series operate is of great importance for our understanding of a wide range of electronic devices.

Practical Activity: Exploring Capacitors in Series

Project Objective

Enhance theoretical and practical understanding of capacitors in series and their properties.

Project Description

Students will build a circuit that connects capacitors in series and will conduct experiments to measure and analyze the combined capacitance.

Required Materials

  • Three or more capacitors with known capacitances
  • Connection wires with alligator clips
  • Multimeter

Step by Step

  1. Circuit Construction: Assemble a circuit with the capacitors in series using the connection wires. Pay attention to the polarity of the capacitors and the quality of the connections.
  2. Measurement of Combined Capacitance: Use the multimeter to measure the combined capacitance of the capacitors in series. Record the results.
  3. Theoretical Analysis: Using the formula for the capacitance of capacitors in series, calculate the theoretical value of the capacitance of your circuit. Compare the results obtained experimentally with the theoretical value. Discuss possible reasons for any discrepancies.
  4. Report: Each group must produce a detailed report of their experiments, results, and analysis.

Project Deliverables

  • Project Report: The report should contain the following main topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

    1. Introduction: The student should contextualize the theme, its relevance and application in the real world as well as the objective of this project.

    2. Development: Write the theory behind capacitors in series, explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.

    3. Conclusion: Summarize the main points, explaining the learnings obtained and the conclusions drawn from the project. Highlight what the challenges were and how they were overcome.

    4. Bibliography: Indicate the sources on which they relied to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

This project should be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 people and must be delivered within one month. Each student must commit to 5 to 10 hours of work.
