This is a fundamental principle that governs the operation of magnets and is one of the first concepts that will be explored in this project.

Properties of magnets, such as polarity, magnetism, and attraction/repulsion, are incredibly important in our technological world. They are used in a variety of technological applications, including generating electricity in power plants, operating electric motors, in speakers and headphones, in computer hard drives, in magnetic resonance imaging used in hospitals, etc.

Practical Activity: "Exploring the World of Magnets"

Project Objective

This practical activity aims to allow students to explore the properties of magnets through the performance of simple yet effective experiments in a controlled environment. The knowledge acquired throughout the project should be consolidated in the preparation of a final report that addresses both theory and practice.

Detailed Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, will carry out a series of experiments to explore the properties of magnets, including polarity, attraction and repulsion between magnets, and the influence of magnets on different materials.

Required Materials

  • Magnets of different shapes and sizes
  • Paper clips
  • Iron filings
  • Plastic or glass
  • Rope or string
  • Paper and colored pens to record the results

Detailed Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity

  1. Exploring Polarity

    • Take two magnets and try to put them together from different sides. Take notes of your observations. What happens when you try to put the opposite sides together? And the same sides?
  2. Materials Reaction to the Magnetic Field

    • Next, take some paper clips and bring them close to the magnet. Observe what happens and record your observations. What happens if you place several paper clips close to the magnet?
  3. Visualizing Magnetic Fields

    • To visualize the magnetic field, spread the iron filings on a plastic or glass surface and place the magnet underneath. Observe the formation of patterns and try to describe what you are seeing.
  4. Magnetic Force

    • Finally, tie a magnet to one end of the rope and hold the other end so that the magnet hangs. Bring another magnet close and observe what happens. Does the hanging magnet move? Record your observations.

At the end of the practical activities, students must prepare a detailed report, written in collaboration by all group members. The report should include:
