Contextualization
The electric field, the central theme of our project, is one of the fundamental concepts of physics. It has been studied in detail by brilliant physicists over the years and serves as the basis for our current understanding of electricity and magnetism. The electric field describes the interaction between electric charges and is measured in Newton per Coulomb (N/C).
Gauss's Law, directly derived from Coulomb's Law, is a gem in itself. It allows simplifying the resolution of many problems involving symmetry and electric fields, such as determining the electric field created by a charged infinite plate or a charged sphere. Understanding it allows us to model and understand various physical phenomena, from atomic structure to atmospheric phenomena.
Electric fields and Gauss's Law have incredibly broad applications. They are fundamental in various natural phenomena and are also present in a surprising range of modern technologies. By learning about electric fields and Gauss's Law, you will not only delve into an intriguing topic in physics but also gain a deeper appreciation of how the world around you works. The principles of electric fields are present in our household appliances, cars, telecommunications, medicine, space travel, and much more!

Practical Activity
Activity Title: Let's Build an Electrophorus!
Project Objective:
This activity aims to demonstrate the practical and visual application of Gauss's Law of the electric field by building a tool used to generate static charge, known as an electrophorus.
Detailed Project Description:
The groups will build an electrophorus, a simple device that uses the principles of the electric field and Gauss's Law to generate and transfer static charges. The constructed electrophorus should be able to accumulate static charges and transfer them to a neutral object, creating a visible attraction or repulsion.
Students will document the entire construction process, explaining the steps and the physical principles being applied. Additionally, they should conduct experiments with the built electrophorus, observing and recording the effects of attraction and repulsion.
Required Materials:
- Aluminum cans or plastic containers (one per group)
- Ebonite (a small piece per group)
- Aluminum foil
- Glue
- Rubber gloves
- Styrofoam ball or lightweight pendulum (such as a piece of string)
Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:
-
Each group should externally cover the can or container with aluminum foil, fixing it with glue. Make sure the surface is smooth and uniform.
-
Next, students should put on rubber gloves and rub the ebonite against hair or a piece of wool to generate static charge.
-
The charged side of the ebonite should be brought close to the surface of the aluminum (without touching it), resulting in a charge accumulation on the aluminum.
-
Bring the styrofoam ball or lightweight pendulum close to the electrophorus and observe what happens. (The attraction or repulsion between the styrofoam ball or lightweight pendulum and the electrophorus will demonstrate the presence of the generated electric field).
-
Document the entire process, taking photos or making videos of the project steps and experiments conducted.
-
Research and explain how the accumulation of charges and the principle of attraction and repulsion relate to Gauss's Law.
Project Deliverables:
At the end of the project, each group must produce a report, following the structure given at the beginning of the project (Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography). The report should include:
- Detailed description of the electrophorus construction process, with attached photos or videos.
- Theoretical explanation of how the electric field and Gauss's Law apply to the electrophorus operation.
- Account of the experiments conducted with the electrophorus, including observations and interpretations of the results.
- Connection of the practical activity with the theoretical knowledge learned and conclusions about the experience as a whole.
The report should be rich in details and clarity, demonstrating an understanding of the concept and principles involved, as well as the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practice. The report submission deadline is one week after the completion of the practical activity.
