Electricity: Electric Potential Energy

Context

Electrical potential energy is an extremely relevant concept not only for physics itself, but also for understanding the world around us. To comprehend the functioning of electrical devices such as cell phones, televisions, refrigerators, among others, knowledge about it is fundamental. Furthermore, electrical potential energy plays a crucial role in the production and distribution of electrical energy, which directly impacts our quality of life.

Electrical potential energy is, essentially, the capacity that a system formed by electric charges has to do work. In other words, it is the energy that these charges can transfer to another system. Therefore, any device or system that depends on the interaction between electric charges to operate is related to electrical potential energy.

Thus, it is crucial to understand what electrical potential energy is, how it is generated, how it can be transferred, and how it can be used. To assist you on this journey of discovery, we suggest reading the book 'Physics for Scientists and Engineers: Electromagnetism, Optics, and Modern Physics, Volume 2' by Paul A. Tipler. Additionally, for a more visual and interactive understanding, we recommend the video 'Understanding Electrical Potential Energy in 5 minutes!' available on the YouTube channel 'Ciência Todo Dia'.

Working with the concept of electrical potential energy in the classroom will allow us to carry out a series of practical and engaging experiments. The goal of this project is, through the proposed activities, to provide students with a complete and solid understanding of this topic, improving their ability to solve problems and apply the acquired knowledge in everyday situations.

Practical Activity

Exploring Electrical Potential Energy: Construction and Analysis of a Simple Electrical Circuit

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to provide students with a practical understanding of electrical potential energy through the construction and analysis of a simple electrical circuit, as well as the discussion of the involved concepts and the elaboration of a detailed report on the experiment.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people and will be responsible for building a simple electrical circuit with a battery, a light bulb, and copper wires, in order to observe electrical potential energy in action. Additionally, they should record all the steps of the experiment, collect relevant data, develop arguments to explain what they observed, and finally, report all this information in a well-structured report.

Required Materials

  1. One 1.5V battery
  2. One small light bulb (that can operate with 1.5V)
  3. Copper wires
  4. Multimeter

Detailed Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity

  1. Planning: Students should discuss and plan how they will assemble the electrical circuit using the available materials.

  2. Construction: With the planning done, the next step is to build the electrical circuit. Students must connect the battery, the light bulb, and the wires in a way that the electrical potential energy of the battery can light up the bulb. During this process, they should take photos or make drawings to document the procedure.

  3. Analysis: After assembling the circuit, students should light up the bulb and observe. They should also use the multimeter to measure the battery's electrical voltage and the current passing through the bulb, and record this information for further analysis.

  4. Discussion: Students should discuss what happened during the experiment, explaining why the bulb lit up, what this has to do with electrical potential energy, and how the multimeter readings relate to this. They should record their discussions and conclusions for inclusion in the report.

  5. Report Elaboration: Finally, students should compile all the information into a report. The report should follow the recommended structure: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography. In the introduction, they should contextualize the experiment and explain its objective. In the development, they should detail the procedure followed, the measurements taken, and present a theoretical discussion on electrical potential energy and how it manifested in the experiment. In the conclusions, they should highlight the main findings and final considerations of the project, and lastly, in the bibliography, indicate the sources consulted during the elaboration of the work.

The project workload should be around five to ten hours, so that students can carry out the experiment, analyze the results, and elaborate the report adequately. The deadline for submission should be one month.

At the end of the project, students should have a greater understanding of the concept of electrical potential energy and how it applies in the real world. Furthermore, they will develop important skills such as teamwork, time management, communication, and problem-solving.
