Electricity: Electric Charge

Contextualization

Physics, as everyone knows, is the science that studies the laws governing the universe. Among its many branches, there is one that is especially relevant to our daily lives: electrostatics. This branch of physics deals with the study of stationary electric charges. This study allows us to understand the composition of atoms and the behaviors of materials in different contexts. And one of the essential concepts in this branch of physics is electric charge.

Electric charge is a fundamental property of matter that determines its electromagnetic interactions. The unit of electric charge is the coulomb (C), and one of the most fascinating characteristics of electric charge is that it always comes in discrete multiples of the electron's charge, -1.6 x 10^-19 C, or the proton's charge, +1.6 x 10^-19 C. In other words, the charge of any entity is always an integer times the charge of the electron or the proton.

In terms of the real world, electric charge and electrostatics are forces at play in almost every aspect of our daily lives. From the functioning of electronic devices, such as cell phones and computers, to the chemical and biological interactions that enable life as we know it, understanding electric charge and electrostatics is essential to understanding how the world around us works.

In the context of an educational project, electric charge is a perfect theme for investigation. This is because the topic combines theory and practice, giving students the opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired in real experiments and verify the results obtained. Furthermore, the study of electric charge allows the development of skills in different areas, such as mathematics, science, research skills, among others.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "The Dance of Charges"

Project Objective

This activity aims at the main understanding and practical application of the concept of electric charge. Students will have to build an electrostatic pendulum, through which they can observe the interaction between different types of charges and understand the quantization of electric charge.

Detailed Project Description

Groups of 3 to 5 students should build an electrostatic pendulum using simple and easily accessible materials. They will then use the pendulum in a series of experiments to explore the concept of electric charge.

Required Materials

  1. Nylon thread or fishing line (about 1 meter)
  2. Styrofoam ball, ping-pong ball, or any other lightweight sphere
  3. Support to hang the thread (can be a ruler, a tree branch, or something similar)
  4. Party balloon
  5. Wool, hair, or any other material to generate static charge on the balloon
  6. Plastic ruler
  7. Paper towel

Step by Step

Step 1:

Students should tie one end of the thread to the sphere and the other end to the support, so that the sphere hangs and can move freely.

Step 2:

Next, they should rub the balloon on the wool or hair to generate static charge, and bring it close to the sphere without touching it. The group should observe what happens and record the observations.

Step 3:

The students should then touch the balloon to the sphere and observe what happens. Again, they should record the observations.

Step 4:

Finally, the group should rub the plastic ruler on the paper towel to generate static charge, and repeat steps 2 and 3 with the ruler in place of the balloon. Students should compare their observations with the previous ones and try to explain the differences.

Note: The steps should be repeated at least three times to confirm the results.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group must submit a detailed report with the following topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

In the Introduction, students should contextualize the concept of electric charge, its relevance, and how it was explored in the project.

In the Development, students should describe the project in detail, the steps taken, the methodology used, and present and discuss the results obtained. It is important that they explain the theory of electric charge and how it manifested in the experiments conducted.

In the Conclusion, students should summarize the main points, what they learned from the experience, and what understanding of the concept of electric charge they developed from this project.

In the Bibliography, students should list all the research sources used during the project development.

This project should be completed in one week, and each student should spend two to four hours in total for completion. It is worth noting that this activity aims, in addition to scientific knowledge, to develop socio-emotional skills such as communication, teamwork, proactivity, time management, among others.
