Thermodynamics: Work of a Gas

Contextualization

Thermodynamics is a branch of physics that studies the relationships between heat, work, and energy. This branch is fundamental for the understanding of many natural phenomena and for the development of numerous modern technologies, from internal combustion engines to refrigerators.

In thermodynamics, the study of gases plays a special role. The work performed by a gas is at the heart of how many engines and machines operate. However, gases are also fundamental for understanding a variety of natural phenomena, such as meteorology and atmospheric chemistry, as well as advanced technologies, such as rocket propulsion.

Gases, like any type of matter, can perform work. In the context of thermodynamics, work is the process by which energy is transferred between systems. In the case of gases, work is often associated with the expansion or compression of the gas. When expanding, a gas performs work on the surroundings, pushing against it and transferring energy to it. In the reverse process, compression, the surroundings perform work on the gas, transferring energy to the gas and increasing its internal energy.

Importance of the Topic

The work performed by a gas is a cornerstone of the thermodynamic description of how energy is transferred and transformed. This concept has profound implications and is crucial for many aspects of modern technology.

A wide variety of industrial machines and devices, ranging from simple air compressors to internal combustion engines and gas turbines, operate based on the principle of work performed by gases. This concept is also fundamental for the operation of refrigeration and air conditioning devices.

Furthermore, understanding the work of gases is crucial for the comprehension of a variety of natural phenomena. For example, the expansion and compression of atmospheric gases play a central role in meteorology, and understanding the work of gases is crucial for understanding the chemical processes in the atmosphere.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: The Thermodynamic Scale: Understanding the Work of a Gas

Project Objective

The main objective of this project is to provide students with a practical and theoretical understanding of the work performed by a gas during expansion and compression, as well as the application of this principle in internal combustion engines.

Detailed Project Description

This project is done in groups of 3 to 5 students and an effort of 5 to 10 hours per participant is expected for completion. The project involves the realization of a practical experiment - the construction of a simple Stirling engine - followed by a theoretical analysis of the experiment.

Required Materials

  1. An empty soda can
  2. Adhesive tape
  3. Aluminum foil
  4. A candle
  5. Popsicle sticks
  6. A rubber band

Detailed Steps

  1. Construction of the Stirling Engine: Students should build a simple Stirling engine using an empty soda can, aluminum foil, popsicle sticks, and a rubber band following the instructions in the link: How to Build a Simple Stirling Engine. This engine is a perfect example of a device that performs work through the expansion and compression of a gas.

  2. Experiment Execution: Once the engine is built, students should light the candle and place the Stirling engine over the flame. Students should observe and take notes on what happens.

  3. Theoretical Analysis: After conducting the experiment, students should seek to understand why and how the engine works. They should research and discuss the idea of work performed by a gas, and how it applies to the Stirling engine. This discussion should include the description of the gas transformations that occur in the engine, the relationship between pressure, volume, and temperature, and how energy is transferred and transformed.

  4. Project Report: Finally, students should write a detailed report on the project. The report should include an introduction, a detailed description of the Stirling engine and the experiment, a discussion of the theory of gas work and how it applies to the engine, and a conclusion.

Project Deliverables

The project culminates in the elaboration of a written report. The document should contain:

  1. Introduction: The student should contextualize the topic, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.

  2. Development: Students should explain the theory behind the work of a gas, detail the activity, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.

  3. Conclusion: The student should conclude the work by summarizing its main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions about the project.

  4. Bibliography: The student should indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

This report is not only a project deliverable but also a document that records the student's learning throughout the project.
