Introduction

Sociology, as a discipline, has as its object of study society. Within this broad scope, themes such as human coexistence, social interaction, and isolation are of extreme relevance. These concepts are the basis of various sociological theories and allow for a wide field of study on human behavior and the structuring of society.

Human coexistence is understood as the way individuals interact and relate to each other and to the space in which they live, guided by social rules and norms. Social interaction, in turn, refers to the way individuals connect, interact, and mutually influence each other, giving rise to various social phenomena. Isolation, on the other hand, is the lack or limitation of this social interaction, whether by choice or external circumstances, and can have significant effects on the individual and society.

Aligned with these concepts, the present project aims to broaden students' understanding of the relevance of human coexistence, the potential of social interaction, and the impact of isolation on both individual and collective levels.

Contextualization

In current times, characterized by globalization and the immediacy provided by information and communication technologies, the concepts of human coexistence, social interaction, and isolation are increasingly present and visible. Social networks, instant communication platforms, video conferences, and other technologies provide new forms of interaction that reshape human relationships and societal dynamics.

On the other hand, we also experience the phenomenon of isolation, whether due to the social distancing imposed by the pandemic context or voluntary isolation encouraged by an increasingly digital and less physical life. Thus, understanding these phenomena and their implications for life in society becomes increasingly urgent.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Coexistence, Interaction, and Isolation: A Sociological Simulation

Project Objective

To practically understand the concepts of human coexistence, social interaction, and isolation and their implications on social structure, relating them to the impact of technologies on this dynamic.

Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people, and each group will be a 'micro-society' with its own rules and dynamics to be defined by the students. During one week, the students must simulate a social life within these 'micro-societies' using only a digital communication platform chosen by the students (WhatsApp, Discord, etc.). The groups will be subjected to different conditions of 'social isolation,' which must be observed and recorded throughout the period. After the simulation, the students must produce a detailed report on the project, analyzing the experiences and results achieved in light of the theories and concepts studied.

• Digital communication platform (WhatsApp, Discord, etc.)
• Internet access devices (computers, smartphones, etc.)
• Note-taking materials (notebook or note-taking software)

Step by Step

1. Formation of groups and definition of 'micro-societies': each group must establish the rules and norms of coexistence and social interaction within the 'micro-society.'
2. Choose the digital communication platform to be used during the simulation.
3. Define the level of 'social isolation' that each 'micro-society' will be subjected to. It can range from total interaction among all members to the isolation of some members, for example.
4. Start of the simulation: during one week, the students must live in their 'micro-society,' following the established rules and observing the dynamics that are established.
5. Documentation and recording of interactions and behaviors observed according to the level of 'social isolation.'
6. After the end of the simulation, the students must produce a detailed report on the experience. This report should include four main topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.
   • Introduction: Description of the 'micro-society,' established rules, platform used, and level of 'social isolation' applied.
   • Development: Discussion of the simulation - what happened throughout the week, which behaviors were observed, how people adapted to 'social isolation,' and how social interaction occurred within the digital platform. Application of the studied sociological concepts and theories to interpret the observed dynamics.
   • Conclusion: Reflection on the experience - what was learned about the concepts of human coexistence, social interaction, and isolation. What were the difficulties and challenges faced. How technology influenced social interaction.
   • Bibliography: Citation of the theoretical sources used to support the report.

Project Deliverables

Each group must deliver a detailed report on the project. This report should address both the theoretical and practical aspects, describing the 'micro-society' created, the interactions that occurred on the digital platform, and the influence of 'social isolation.' Additionally, the report should include a critical analysis of these experiences based on the studied sociological concepts and theories. This document written by each group will be the final proof of the students' learning about the concepts of human coexistence, social interaction, and isolation and their impacts on society.
