Adjectives

Contextualization

We live in a globalized world where the need to communicate in different languages is increasing. Spanish, being the second most spoken language in the world, opens up numerous doors and opportunities both academically and professionally. Therefore, learning and mastering the Spanish language is a crucial skill in today's world.

One of the fundamental aspects of Spanish, and any language, is the use of adjectives. They are used to describe, characterize, and specify people, places, objects, and situations. Without them, our speech would be vague and imprecise, making understanding and effective communication difficult.

Introduction to the theory

Adjectives in Spanish agree in gender (masculine, feminine) and number (singular, plural) with the nouns they modify, which differs from English, for example, where adjectives do not change. So, it is essential to understand how they work for correct and effective communication.

There are several types of adjectives in Spanish, depending on their uses and meanings. For example, qualitative adjectives express quality, characteristic, or state of the noun, while possessive adjectives indicate possession. In addition, demonstrative adjectives point out the distance of the noun from the speaker.

Furthermore, adjectives can have degrees of intensity: positive, comparative, and superlative. They are used to express comparisons or extremes, respectively. For example, "María es más alta que Sofía" (Maria is taller than Sofia), "Juan es el más inteligente de la clase" (Juan is the smartest in the class).

Practical Activity: "Adjectives in Action"

This activity aims to acquire a deep understanding of adjectives in the Spanish language, their use, and application in different contexts. It also aims for students to use their creativity, collaboration skills, and time management.

Project Objective

The main objective of this activity is for students to identify and correctly use the different types of adjectives in Spanish. This includes understanding their variation according to gender and number, and how they are used to describe, characterize, and specify. Additionally, students are expected to know how to include these adjectives in conversations, writings, and presentations.

Detailed Project Description

This project will be divided into three stages and will be carried out by groups of 3 to 5 students. It is expected that each student dedicates at least 12 hours to the project development.

  1. Research and study: Students must research in-depth the different types of adjectives, their uses, variations, and applications. They should use various sources of information, make summaries, and study sheets. This material will serve for the following stages.

  2. Creation of a "Synthetic Adjective Dictionary": In this stage, each group must develop a "Synthetic Adjective Dictionary." This should include the most used adjectives, their uses, applications, and examples of sentences. Students can use their creativity to design this dictionary. It is important that each group member participates in creating this resource.

  3. Preparation and performance of a play: Students must prepare and perform a short play in which the studied adjectives are used. The script must be written by the students and must incorporate as many adjectives as possible. The play must also be recorded for evaluation.

Required Materials

  • Research material: computer with internet access, books, notebooks, etc.
  • Materials to elaborate the "Synthetic Adjective Dictionary": Paper, colored pencils, markers, glue, scissors, etc.
  • Materials for the play: Costumes, decorations, camera for recording, etc.

Steps to Follow

  1. Formation of groups and assignment of roles.
  2. Conduct research on adjectives.
  3. Creation of the "Synthetic Adjective Dictionary".
  4. Writing the script for the play.
  5. Rehearsals of the play.
  6. Performance and recording of the play.
  7. Writing the final report.

The project deliveries are: the study material created during the research, the "Synthetic Adjective Dictionary," the recording of the play, and the final report.

The final report must be in line with the work done and must contain an introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography used. In the introduction, students must contextualize the topic of adjectives and their importance in learning the Spanish language. In the development, they must explain the research process, creation of the dictionary, and preparation of the play. Additionally, they must indicate the methodology used and the results obtained. In the conclusions, they must summarize the main points, explain the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn from the project. Finally, in the bibliography, they must indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project.
