Adverbial Clauses

Contextualization

Adverbial clauses, a central theme of the proposed project, are subordinate clauses which function as an adverb within the sentence structure. They can express conditions, causes, consequences, and other circumstances, filling a crucial role in constructing the semantic meaning of texts found throughout our everyday lives.

To understand their structure and classification, we'll look to Portuguese grammar itself. There are nine types of adverbial clauses, each representing a different type of circumstance: cause, consequence, condition, purpose, concession, time, place, company, and manner. Mastering these linguistic structures is vital to comprehending and producing effective, expressive texts.

Adverbial clauses, in all their many forms, are powerful tools for those who wield them well. They can lend depth and complexity to sentences, rendering them richer and more meaningful. And that is precisely the skill we aim to develop through this project.

These clauses are not just found in literary or academic texts. On the contrary, they are woven into our daily conversations, the news we read, and the music we listen to. Without them, our communication would be far less nuanced and expressive.

Journalists, for instance, utilize adverbial clauses to append salient details to the events they report. Writers wield them to paint vivid pictures and craft immersive stories. And even on a more personal level, we employ these structures in our daily interactions, sharing experiences, conveying emotions, and convincing others of our perspectives.

In this project, we will dive deep into adverbial clauses, grasping their inner workings and practical applications. We will create and analyze texts, author short stories, and recount experiences, ever focusing on these clauses and their contributions to the overall richness and expressiveness of our language.

Here are some key materials we will study and use throughout our exploration:

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Adverbial Adventures - Constructing and Analyzing Adverbial Clauses in Real-Life Contexts"

Project Objective

The goal of this project is to explore the practical use of adverbial clauses and appreciate their importance in effective communication. To that end, students will generate various multimedia content – a blog article, podcast script, and theatrical play – all featuring a thorough examination and use of adverbial clauses.

Project Description

This multidisciplinary project will merge aspects of Portuguese Language, Arts, Technology, and Communication, inviting teams of 3 to 5 students. It is estimated to require 15 hours of work per student.

Materials

  1. Grammar reference books and/or reputable websites for researching adverbial clauses
  2. Equipment for audio recording (podcast) and video recording (theatrical play)
  3. Internet access and a blog for publishing the article (this blog can be created for the project’s purposes)
  4. Audio and video editing equipment (including recording devices and a computer with editing software)

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Research and Study: Students will thoroughly study adverbial clauses and their nine categories. This includes not only their theoretical underpinnings but also their identification within a range of texts. Each team member should focus on two categories of adverbial clauses, ensuring comprehensive coverage.

  2. Content Generation: Each group will produce three distinct types of content: a blog article, a podcast script, and a theatrical play, each featuring prominent use of adverbial clauses.

2.1. Blog Article: Students will create an article analyzing the use of adverbial clauses in a piece of their choosing (which could be a news article, short story, song, etc.). The article should feature examples taken from this piece, highlighting and discussing these clauses.

2.2. Podcast Script: Groups will devise a podcast focused on the use and importance of adverbial clauses in everyday communication. They may include interviews, practical examples, and even a section dedicated to rectifying common mistakes associated with adverbial clauses.

2.3. Theatrical Play: Groups will write and perform a short play (10-15 minutes in length), incorporating adverbial clauses meaningfully into the storyline. This play should be recorded on video, adhering to all appropriate safety protocols.

  3. Documentation: Once they have completed their project, each group should submit a detailed project report, structured as an academic paper including Introduction, Body, Conclusion, and Bibliography, similar to the outline included within this document.

The Introduction should establish context for the theme, its real-life relevance and applications, as well as the project’s specific objectives. In the Body, students should outline the theory behind adverbial clauses, describe each activity carried out, explain the methods and techniques employed, and finally present and discuss their results and insights. The Conclusion offers an opportunity to summarize the main takeaways and discuss what the group learned from the experience. And lastly, to ensure academic integrity, a Bibliography should list and credit all external sources.

Project Deliverables

Upon completion, each group shall deliver the following:

  1. A blog post featuring their article analyzing the use of adverbial clauses.
  2. A podcast script accompanied by the recorded podcast.
  3. A script for the theatrical play along with a video recording of their performance.
  4. A final project report chronicling the entire creative process.
