Linguistic Variation

Contextualization

Portuguese, like any other language, is a living and dynamic entity, changing and adapting over time. Part of this dynamism is reflected in its great diversity of forms and uses, expressed through its various Linguistic Variations. These variations, which are different ways of using the language, can be classified into various categories, such as geographical, historical, social, among others. In the scope of the Portuguese language, especially in Brazil, this diversity is even more evident, being an integral part of our cultural identity.

Throughout our history, the various cultural influences that shaped the Portuguese language in Brazil have resulted in a rich mosaic of forms of expression, each with its unique characteristics. This is evidenced by the way people from different regions of the country, different social groups, or age groups speak and write. In this sense, the study of linguistic variations allows us not only to better understand the structure and evolution of our language but also to reflect on the diversity and complexity of our society.

Importance of Linguistic Variations

In the modern world, the ability to understand, respect, and adapt to different forms of expression is a fundamental aspect of various skills, such as communicative competence, empathy, and critical thinking. Linguistic variations, in this sense, are a key element in this process, as they reflect the differences and similarities between different social groups, regions, and even nations.

Within the school environment, the study of linguistic variations can promote greater inclusion and diversity by allowing students to feel recognized and valued in their forms of expression. Furthermore, it can contribute to a broader and more critical linguistic education that recognizes the plurality of the Portuguese language and its uses.

Practical Activity

"Map of Linguistic Variations in Brazil"

Project Objective

The objective of the project is to promote research, reflection, and discussion on the linguistic variations of the Portuguese language in Brazil. For this, students will work in groups of 3 to 5 people and will create a "Map of Linguistic Variations in Brazil", which will map and explain various forms of expression of the Portuguese language in different regions of the country.

Detailed Project Description

The project will be divided into two main parts: research and map creation.

  1. Research: In this part, each group will research the linguistic variations of the Portuguese language in different regions of Brazil. At least five states of the country should be chosen, preferably from different regions, and students should gather information on how the Portuguese language is used in these states. Additionally, they should seek to understand how the social, cultural, and historical characteristics of these regions influence the way the language is used.

  2. Map Creation: After the research, students will create an interactive map of Brazil. For each state they researched, they should include a marker on the map that, when clicked, will open a brief description of the linguistic variations found in that state, as well as examples of these variations. The map should be created using an interactive map creation tool, such as Google My Maps.

Required Materials

  • Internet access for research and map creation
  • Google My Maps account or another platform for creating interactive maps

Detailed Step-by-Step Guide for Activity Completion

  1. Define the states to be researched and divide tasks within the group.
  2. Research on the linguistic variations of the Portuguese language in the defined states.
  3. Review and group discussion of each member's findings.
  4. Create the interactive map of Brazil and include markers for each state.
  5. Finalize the map, review, and make final adjustments.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group must deliver:

  1. Interactive Map of Linguistic Variations in Brazil: The map must be shared with the teacher and contain markers for each of the researched states. Each marker should include a brief description of the linguistic variations found in that state and examples of these variations.

  2. Final Report: In addition to the map, each group must prepare a final report. The report should include the following topics:

    • Introduction: In this topic, students should introduce the theme of linguistic variations and their relevance to understanding the Portuguese language in Brazil. They should also mention the project's objective and the states chosen for research.
    • Development: Here, students should explain the methodology used in the research and present the results obtained. Additionally, they should discuss how the social, cultural, and historical characteristics of the researched states are reflected in the linguistic variations found.
    • Conclusion: In this topic, students should conclude the work by summarizing the main points and presenting the conclusions drawn about the linguistic variations of the Portuguese language in Brazil.
    • Bibliography: Finally, students should indicate the sources used in the research.

Students should organize themselves to divide the available time (one month) among the research tasks, map creation, and report elaboration, so that all activities are completed on time. It is expected that each student dedicates five to ten hours to this project.
