This diversity is what makes language so rich and complex. And beyond the theoretical or grammatical aspect, linguistic variation has profound and direct implications in our lives: it is related to identity, power, linguistic prejudice, and public policies for teaching and recognizing differences.
In summary, linguistic variation is a normal and expected phenomenon that highlights the liveliness and richness of our language. By recognizing and valuing these differences, we can contribute to a more tolerant and inclusive world.
Importance and Practical Applications
In the teaching of the Portuguese language, it is essential that we have a variationist view, that is, that we recognize that language changes according to geographical context, speech situation, the age of the speakers, their profession, among other aspects.
In practice, this means that students should be taught to understand and value linguistic diversity and to use the appropriate variant for each communication situation. Furthermore, the study of linguistic variation can be a tool to combat linguistic prejudice and promote a more equitable and inclusive learning environment.
Moreover, the study of linguistic variations is not limited to the classroom. It is a gateway to understanding other social and cultural phenomena and can be useful in various fields of knowledge, such as literature, history, sociology, anthropology, and psychology.

Activity Title: "Exploring Linguistic Variations"
Activity Objective
The objective of this project is to investigate the linguistic variations present in Brazil and understand the impact and importance of these differences in communication, identity construction, and combating linguistic prejudice.
Detailed Activity Description
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people and will be tasked with choosing a linguistic variation present in our country. The variation can be geographical (different regions of Brazil), social (different social groups), age-related (different age groups), etc.
After choosing the theme, students should conduct research to collect examples of the chosen variation (which can be words, expressions, accents, etc.) and understand the circumstances and contexts in which this variation is used.
Students should also seek information about people's perception of this linguistic variation: is it viewed with prejudice? Is it valued?
Based on the research conducted, the groups should create a simple 5 to 10-minute video presenting their findings. The video should be creative and informative, containing both the collected examples and the students' reflections on the topic.
Necessary Materials
- Computer with Internet access for research.
- Camera or smartphone to record the video.
- Various materials for video creation (paper, pen, costumes, etc.), depending on the groups' creativity.
Detailed Step-by-Step
- Form groups and discuss the concept of linguistic variation, providing examples and contexts for the students.
- Groups should choose the linguistic variation they want to work with.
- Conduct online and/or library research to collect examples and understand the chosen variation.
- Groups discuss their findings and plan how to present the information in a video.
- Groups record the video, being creative and didactic.
- After completing the video, groups should prepare a written report following the suggested format: Introduction, Development, Conclusion, and Bibliography.
- Groups present their videos and reports to the class.
Deliverables and Preparation of the Written Document
Students should submit both the video and the written report. The video will serve to creatively and didactically present the findings made during the research.
The written report, on the other hand, should be a more formal and detailed document. Students should contextualize the chosen linguistic variation (Introduction), explain the research conducted and discuss the results (Development), and highlight the learnings and conclusions drawn about the chosen linguistic variation (Conclusion).
Additionally, students should list the sources used for the research (Bibliography), following the ABNT standards.
These two deliverables complement each other and together provide a complete view of the work carried out by the students during the practical activity.
