Writing and Orality

Contextualization

Understanding the nuances of the Portuguese language involves grasping the complexity of its orality and writing. These two components present particularities that enrich our language and, at the same time, intertwine in the construction of meanings.

Orality is the most practical and instantaneous means of communication, and it is full of idiosyncrasies. Speech carries many contextual elements such as intonation, speed, pauses, and emotions. In addition, spoken language can vary greatly according to the culture, geography, and social context of the speaker.

Writing, on the other hand, is more formal and structured, with stricter grammatical rules. It allows for a greater elaboration of complex thoughts and in-depth analysis. Writing has the advantage of being lasting and enabling communication at a distance or even across time.

Conceiving the differentiation between orality and writing contributes to building a more solid and comprehensive perception of our language. Besides being essential for adequate communication in various situations of our daily lives, mastering these skills is also crucial in many professional careers.

For example, a lawyer needs to communicate effectively both in writing and orally. The ability to argue and persuade may heavily depend on the knowledge of these two facets of language.

Another example is communication and media professionals. They often specialize in oral forms of expression (such as news narrators, radio or TV show hosts, podcasters) or writing (such as writers, print journalists, advertising copywriters).

Opportunities to explore and enhance our writing and orality are abundant in our daily lives, whether in social interactions with friends and family, in the work environment, or in educational settings. Therefore, understanding the differences, similarities, and particularities between these two modes of expression is essential to improve our relationships, professional performance, and even our self-expression.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "From Orality to Writing: A Communicative Journey"

Project Objective:

This project aims to provide students with the opportunity to explore the breadth of the Portuguese language in its oral and written forms. Through practical activities, students will be able to investigate the differences, similarities, and particularities of these two modes, enhancing their communication and expression skills.

Detailed Project Description:

Divided into groups of 3 to 5 students, participants should first research about orality and writing, including sociolinguistic, historical, cultural, and geographical aspects that influence the Portuguese language. They should also study textual and discursive genres that make up the repertoire of human communication.

After the initial research, each group should choose a relevant theme that will be the focus of a podcast (representing orality) and a written article (representing writing). This theme can cover areas such as literature, history, sciences, philosophy, among others, thus encouraging interdisciplinary approaches.

The podcast and the article should be complementary, meaning they should address the same theme but in different ways, respecting the specificities of orality and writing. The podcast should bring a debate, an interview, or a personal account, with a more colloquial language, use of slang, pauses, intonations, etc. The article, on the other hand, should provide a more in-depth, formal, and structured treatment of the theme, using academic or journalistic language, for example.

Required Materials:

  • Internet access for research
  • Books, articles, documentaries, podcasts, and other reference materials on the chosen theme
  • Audio recording and editing software (free applications can be used)
  • Computers or mobile devices for the elaboration of written material and podcast recording

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Division of students into groups and presentation of the project with its respective stages.
  2. Initial research on orality and writing, involving the aforementioned aspects.
  3. Selection of the theme to be worked on.
  4. Planning and detailed research on the chosen theme.
  5. Drafting of the written article and script for the podcast.
  6. Revision and editing of the written material. Recording and editing of the podcast.
  7. Presentation of the podcast and article by the group to the class.
  8. Production of the final project report, detailing the entire process from initial research to conclusion.

Project Deliverables:

  • A 15 to 30-minute podcast.
  • A written article of three to five pages.
  • A project report containing:

Introduction

In this section, students should present the chosen theme and explain why it is relevant. They should also mention the project's objective, contextualizing the importance of orality and writing.

Development

Here, students should describe the research process and elaboration of the podcast and article. They should include the theories studied, the methodology used, and the different approaches adopted for orality and writing. Additionally, they should discuss the difficulties encountered, as well as the strategies used to overcome them.

Conclusions

Students should reflect on what they have learned throughout the project. They can revisit the main points of the work and discuss the impact of their findings. It is also important to discuss possible applications of the learning in their personal and professional lives.

Bibliography

Students should list all sources consulted during the research, strictly following citation standards.

This interdisciplinary project should take about twelve hours for each student and will be an effective exercise in communication, teamwork, time management, as well as reinforce the understanding of important concepts about the Portuguese language in its oral and written forms.
