Contextualization

Communication is a key piece of our daily lives. We use it to convey our ideas, feelings, information, and much more. In this sense, language, as a means of communication, has a wide range of tools to express all of this. One of these tools in the Spanish language is the "future verbal periphrasis".

The future verbal periphrasis is a verb tense used to express actions that will occur in the future. It is formed by the combination of the verb "ir" in the present tense, followed by the preposition "a" and the infinitive of the main verb. For example, the sentence "Voy a estudiar español mañana" expresses a future action.

The correct use of verbal periphrases, particularly the future tense, not only enhances our oral and written expression, but also helps us better understand what we read or hear in Spanish. Therefore, mastering this linguistic tool is essential to achieve good communication in this language.

On the other hand, learning a foreign language cannot be separated from the knowledge of its culture. Language is a reflection of a people's mind, and therefore, of its history, literature, traditions, customs, and thought.

Based on this, this project will connect the discipline of Spanish with the discipline of history. We will explore not only the future verbal periphrasis in the Spanish language, but also how it has been used in different historical, literary, and cultural contexts of Spain and Latin America.

For the realization of this project, we recommend the following sources:

  1. SpanishDict - A comprehensive guide on the use of verbal periphrases in Spanish, including the future verbal periphrasis.
  2. BBC Languages - Resources for learning and practicing Spanish, including grammar and vocabulary.
  3. Google Scholar - To research academic articles on the use of the future verbal periphrasis in different historical and cultural contexts.
  4. Google Books - To search for books that make use of the future verbal periphrasis, both by contemporary authors and classic authors of Hispanic literature.

Practical Activity

Title: "Future Focus: A Journey through Hispanic Culture"

Project Objective:

  1. Identify and correctly apply the future verbal periphrasis in the Spanish language.
  2. Understand the influence of Hispanic history and culture on the evolution and application of this verb tense.
  3. Develop research, synthesis, analysis, and writing skills.

Detailed Project Description:

This project lasts for four weeks and should be carried out by groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group must select a relevant historical period or cultural movement from Spain or Latin America, such as the Spanish Golden Age, Latin American Modernism, or the Military Dictatorship in Argentina, and investigate the use of the future verbal periphrasis in that context.

Required Materials:

  1. Internet access for research.
  2. Books and/or academic articles on the chosen historical period/cultural movement.

Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Group Formation and Topic Selection: Students group together and choose the historical or cultural period they will investigate. The choice must be justified and submitted in writing in the form of a project proposal.

  2. Investigation: Students research the use of the future verbal periphrasis in the chosen context. They should look for literary texts, political speeches, songs, among others, that illustrate this use. Additionally, they should seek to understand how the history or culture of that period influenced the use of this verb tense.

  3. Analysis and Synthesis: Students analyze the collected documents, identifying and noting examples of the use of the future verbal periphrasis. They should prepare a synthesis that explains how this verb tense was used and what it reflects about the cultural and historical context investigated.

  4. Production of a Documentary: Based on their findings, the group will create a narrative documentary (which can be done using presentation tools such as PowerPoint, Prezi, or video). The documentary should include an explanation of the future verbal periphrasis, the examples found, the analysis of them, and the relationship with the chosen context.

  5. Writing the Final Report: Finally, all groups must write a final project report that includes:

    • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, its relevance and real-world application, and the project's objective. They should also briefly present the chosen historical or cultural period.
    • Development: Detailed explanation of the future verbal periphrasis theory, description of the activities carried out, methodology used, and discussion of the results obtained.
    • Conclusion: The main points of the work and conclusions about the use of the future verbal periphrasis in the investigated context.
    • Bibliography: The sources used for the work in APA citation format.

The final submission will consist of the documentary and the final report, which together provide a comprehensive understanding of the group's research and findings. Both materials will be evaluated taking into account both theoretical understanding and practical application, the quality of research, and the ability to efficiently communicate the findings.
