Subordination is an important Portuguese language concept that deals with the relationship of dependency between sentences within a period. When one sentence is subordinate to another, it means that it complements the meaning of the main sentence, not having a complete meaning by itself.

There are a variety of types of subordination, including substantive, adjective and adverbial, each with specific features and uses. By understanding subordination, students will be able to recognize and produce more structured and cohesive texts.

Beyond grammar, subordination is a concept that is present in our daily communication. Many times in our social interactions, we use subordination without even realizing it. Mastery of this linguistic resource allows us to be more clear and assertive in our communication.

Contextualization

The study of subordination is important both academically and practically. In academic terms, it is one of the pillars for understanding the syntax of the Portuguese language and is essential for producing coherent and cohesive texts.

In practical terms, mastery of subordination contributes to our ability to express ourselves clearly. It is a skill which can be used, for example, when arguing in a work meeting, writing an email or preparing a speech.

In this context, this project aims not only to deepen students' knowledge of subordination, but also to develop their teamwork, research and writing skills.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Subordination in Action

Project Goal

The goal of this project is to encourage practical implementation of the concept of subordination when writing a script for a play. The theme of the play is up to each group, but the use of subordinate clauses in several parts of the script is mandatory.

In addition to the language component, students will also develop socio-emotional skills related to time management, teamwork, creative thinking and problem solving.

Detailed Description of the Project

Students will be divided into groups of 3-5 people, and each group will have the task of writing a play script, which should include dialogues and scene descriptions that are rich in subordination. The sentences should include all three types of subordination: substantive, adjective and adverbial.

Materials Needed

• Internet access for research;
• Reference books on the topic;
• Computers or paper and pens for writing the script.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Carrying Out the Activity

1. Discussion: Each group should discuss and define a theme for the play.

2. Research: Students should do more in-depth research on subordination, using the material indicated in the "Suggested Resources" section and any other sources they consider relevant.

3. Script outline: Next, each group should make a sketch of the script, including the main scenes and characters. This script should be presented to the teacher for approval and guidance.

4. Script development: Based on the approved outline, the groups will further develop the script, working on the construction of the dialogues and the description of the scenes. The focus should be on using subordination, illustrating the different types in different situations.

5. Review and editing: After the initial draft of the script is ready, each group should review the material, adjusting any necessary parts and ensuring that subordination is present and appropriate in all dialogues and descriptions.

6. Final presentation: Each group will present their script to the teacher and the other students. There should be time for discussion and feedback.

7. Report preparation: Based on the practical work carried out, each group should prepare a report, according to the instructions in the "Project Deliverables" section.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group must submit two main deliverables:

1. Play Script: Each group must submit the play script they developed, in which the concept of subordination was applied as a tool for creating dialogues and scene descriptions.

2. Project Report: A report should be written that includes four main topics:

   • Introduction: Here, the theme should be contextualized, presenting its relevance and real-world application, as well as the purpose of this project.
   • Development: The theory behind the project's central theme (subordination) should be explained, the activity carried out should be explained in detail, the methodology used should be indicated and, finally, the results obtained should be presented and discussed.
   • Conclusion: Students should conclude the work by reiterating their main points, stating what they learned and their conclusions about the project.
   • Bibliography: The sources used as a basis for the work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc., should be indicated.

The report should complement the practical work, providing an opportunity for reflection on the process of learning theory and practice.
