Figures of Speech

Contextualization

Syntax figures, also known as construction figures, are stylistic resources used to emphasize, add lyricism, increase expressiveness, or make language more beautiful and persuasive. They are classified into four groups: ellipsis, zeugma, syllepsis, hyperbaton, anacoluthon, and pleonasm. Each one has its characteristics and ways of application in the syntax of a sentence.

In everyday language, we often use these construction figures without even realizing it. Great writers and poets use them to add more beauty and expressiveness to their texts. Learning to recognize and use these syntax figures can help us better understand the Portuguese language and its nuances, as well as improve our writing.

Syntax figures are an important tool in building clearer, lucid, and attractive texts. They can be used to break the monotony of standard language and make writing more dynamic. Furthermore, a good command of these figures allows the writer greater freedom to express themselves and convey their ideas in a more interesting way.

The great geniuses of Portuguese literature, from Camões to Machado de Assis, used syntax figures to build their immortal works. They are also an important element in the world of advertising and marketing, being used to grab the public's attention and make messages more memorable.

Syntax figures are also required in entrance exams and in the ENEM (National High School Exam), as well as being very useful for effective and captivating writing. For all these reasons, the study and mastery of syntax figures are essential for any student of the Portuguese language.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Syntax Figures Theater"

Project Objective

The objectives of this project are:

  1. Enhance students' understanding of syntax figures.
  2. Develop essential skills such as teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
  3. Apply the theoretical knowledge acquired in a practical and concrete way.

Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, and each group must produce a theater play or an audio-drama script where the characters' lines are predominantly constructed using syntax figures. The play's theme is completely free to stimulate the students' creativity. The important thing is that, in all lines, students make an effort to apply syntax figures and can identify and explain each one.

Required Materials

  1. Books and online material for consultation on syntax figures.
  2. Paper and pen for drafting the script or a computer with a word processor.
  3. If students opt for producing a theater play, they may need simple costumes and sets.
  4. In the case of an audio-drama, they will need a cellphone for recordings.

Project Step-by-Step

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students and define who will be the leader of each group.
  2. Each group should brainstorm to define the theme and story of the play.
  3. After defining the story, the group should divide tasks: who will write the script, who will act (if opting for a theater play), who will take care of production and rehearsals, etc.
  4. Each group will write the play's script, with characters' lines rich in syntax figures.
  5. After writing the script, the group should review it, seeking to improve it and correct any possible errors.
  6. The groups will then start rehearsals or recordings (in the case of an audio-drama) until they feel ready for the final presentation.
  7. At the end of the defined period for the project's completion, the groups will make their presentations or submit the recordings for evaluation.

Project Deliverables

In addition to the final presentation, the group must submit a written report containing:

  1. Introduction: The student must contextualize the theme, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.
  2. Development: The student must explain the theory behind syntax figures, detail the activity, indicating the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained. This includes the produced script and the strategies adopted for applying syntax figures.
  3. Conclusion: The student must conclude the work by summarizing its main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions about the project.
  4. Bibliography: The student must indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.
