Substantive Clauses

Contextualization

We all use the Portuguese language every day, whether to ask for a glass of water, to write an essay, or even to express our feelings. At every moment, we are constructing sentences, forming clauses, without even realizing how complex and rich the grammar of our language is. In this activity, we will delve into a specific aspect of our language: substantive subordinate clauses.

Substantive subordinate clauses are a type of clause structure that performs a syntactic function of a noun. It seems complicated, doesn't it? But with dedication and study, you will see that it is simpler than it seems. Substantive clauses can function as subject, verb complement, nominal complement, predicative, and appositive. This is an important tool in our language, and throughout this project, you will understand why.

Introduction

Let's start by going back in time a bit, to ancient Greece, where grammar was born. When we think of grammar, we can think of a set of rules that tell us how we should speak or write. But it's not just that. Grammar is a system, a structure that allows us to communicate effectively and express our thoughts, feelings, and desires.

Portuguese grammar, like the grammar of all languages, is a complex system, with different levels of analysis. One of these levels is syntax, which deals with how words combine to form larger structures, such as clauses and sentences. Within syntax, we have a special type of clause structure called a substantive subordinate clause.

Now, you must be wondering: why should we care about substantive subordinate clauses? Well, they are an essential part of our language. With them, we can express a wide variety of information and feelings in a much more sophisticated and precise way. By learning to recognize them and use them correctly, you can improve your writing and text interpretation skills.

So, let's embark together on this journey of discoveries!

Practical Activity: "Theater of Substantive Clauses"

Objective

The objective of this project is to create a theater piece that illustrates the different types of substantive subordinate clauses and their functions. We will integrate the disciplines of Portuguese and Arts, creating a playful and interactive way to study a complex topic.

Description

In this project, groups will be composed of 3 to 5 students, and the tasks should take more than twelve hours per student, including research time and preparation of material for the performance.

Each group will be responsible for creating a theater script, where the characters are the different types of substantive subordinate clauses, presenting their characteristics and functions in a creative and engaging way. The theater piece should showcase at least four types of substantive subordinate clauses: subjective, direct object, indirect object, and predicative.

Necessary Materials

  • Computer with internet access for research
  • Paper and pens for script creation
  • Set and costume materials that the groups deem necessary

Step by Step

  1. Conduct detailed research on substantive subordinate clauses, focusing on understanding the concept and function of each.
  2. Create characters that represent each type of substantive subordinate clause that will be presented in the theater.
  3. Develop a script that presents the interaction of these characters and highlights their characteristics.
  4. Prepare the set and costumes for the performance, using materials you already have.
  5. Rehearse the theater piece until you are confident for the performance.
  6. Present the piece to the class and record the performance for documentation.

Written Document

In addition to the practical activity, groups should prepare a written document containing 4 main sections: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

1. Introduction

In this section, the group should contextualize the project theme, explain its relevance, and describe the objective of the practical activity. The introduction should provide an overview of what substantive subordinate clauses are.

2. Development

Here, the group should discuss the theory behind substantive subordinate clauses, explain the activity performed in detail, and present the methodology used. Additionally, the group should discuss how the theoretical knowledge was applied in practice during the preparation and presentation of the theater piece.

3. Conclusions

In this section, the group should summarize the main points of the project, discuss the learnings obtained, and draw conclusions about the experience. Discussions about the difficulties encountered and how they were overcome are also relevant in this section.

4. Bibliography

Finally, the group should list all sources consulted for the work.

This project aims to assess students' knowledge of substantive subordinate clauses and to stimulate collaboration and creativity among students. Therefore, it is essential that all group members actively participate in all stages of the project.
