The 19th century was a period of great political, social, and, mainly, cultural transformations. It was the peak of two artistic movements that deeply marked Literature and Visual Arts: Romanticism and Realism. Each of these movements had its own style, themes, and ways of seeing the world.

Romanticism, which flourished in the early 19th century, emphasized freedom of expression, emotion, and imagination. In contrast, Realism, which emerged in the mid-19th century, was marked by a faithful representation of reality, focusing on everyday themes and the lives of the lower classes.

Introduction

In Romanticism, we find an emphasis on individuality, the expression of feelings, and natural beauties. Art and literature come together to portray tragic heroes, impossible love stories, and sublime landscapes.

On the other hand, Realism seeks to capture reality as it is, giving voice to common characters and portraying the social and political issues of the time. It was a movement that brought art and literature closer to people's reality, addressing themes that had been little explored by art.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Artistic Investigation: A Journey between Romanticism and Realism."

Project Objective:

The project aims to allow students to develop a deep understanding of the artistic movements of Romanticism and Realism through research, analysis, and artistic creation. Students will work in groups of 3 to 5 members, with the project estimated to last about 15 hours per student.

Detailed Project Description:

1. Study and Research – Students should start the project with an in-depth study of the artistic movements of Romanticism and Realism. They should identify the main characteristics of these movements, as well as their main artists and works. The goal of this stage is for them to acquire a good theoretical basis on the subject.

2. Analysis of Works - Each group should select two works, one representative of Romanticism and the other of Realism. They should make a detailed analysis of these works, describing their characteristics and relating them to the concepts and characteristics of the respective artistic movements studied.

3. Artistic Creation - In this stage, the groups will create two original works of art, one inspired by Romanticism and the other by Realism. The works can be done in any form of visual art (painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, etc.). Students should justify their choices and explain how their works reflect the characteristics of the movements they studied.

4. Presentation - Finally, each group should organize a presentation for the class, where each member can contribute to the explanation of the research, analysis, and the created works.

Required Materials:

1. Books, articles, and online materials for research.
2. Materials for artistic creation (depending on the art form chosen by the students).
3. Camera or phone with a camera to document the process and record the created artworks.

Detailed Step-by-Step:

1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
2. Each group should research Romanticism and Realism, identifying their main characteristics, artists, and works.
3. Select two works (one representative of Romanticism and one of Realism) for detailed analysis.
4. Based on the identified characteristics of the movements, create two original works of art (one inspired by Romanticism and one by Realism).
5. Document the process of creating the artworks by taking photographs or filming.
6. Prepare a detailed presentation of the research, analysis, and the created works.
7. Present the project to the class.

Project Deliverables:

The project culminates in a final presentation, as well as the delivery of a written report. The report should follow the following format:

1. Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, its relevance and real-world application, and the objective of this project.
2. Development: Explanation of the theory of Romanticism and Realism, detailing the methodology used in the project, description and discussion of the results obtained (analysis of the selected works and the students' creations).
3. Conclusion: Recapitulation of the main points of the project, study conducted, lessons learned, and conclusions about the project.
4. Bibliography: Indicate the sources used for research and work on the project.

In addition to the report, each group should also deliver the photographs or videos of the process of creating the artworks, as well as the artworks created.
