In this project, we will venture into the universe of contemporary art. Contemporary art is an artistic period that began in the 20th century and extends to the present day. It is marked by a plurality of styles, techniques, and themes. Unlike artistic movements of the past, contemporary art is not defined by a common aesthetic or form, but rather by diversity and its critical approach to society and art itself.

In contemporary art, artists use artistic expression to represent reality through their personal perception. Contemporary artworks are not limited to large paintings or sculptures and can encompass performances, urban interventions, installations, videos, among other forms of expression. The themes addressed are varied and can include social, political, cultural issues, among others.

Contemporary art is an important channel of expression and communication in today's society. It allows artists to question, criticize, and reflect on the reality in which they live. Furthermore, it is a means to explore new languages and forms of representation, challenging established aesthetic conventions. Contemporary art is, therefore, a fertile ground for the exercise of critical thinking, reflection, and creativity.

Contemporary art plays a very important role in the current world, as it promotes dialogue, exchange of ideas, and reflection on social and cultural issues. It also contributes to the formation of cultural identity, as it allows different voices and perspectives to be represented and heard.

Practical Activity

Activity Title:

Exploring Contemporary Art: A Virtual Exhibition

Project Objective:

• Understand the context and characteristics of contemporary art through research and analysis of artworks.
• Propose and create a virtual exhibition with selected artworks and original creations that reflect a relevant social theme.

Detailed Project Description:

Groups (of 3 to 5 students) will be tasked with creating a virtual exhibition of contemporary art. This exhibition should consist of works by renowned artists, as well as original creations by the students, always focusing on a socially relevant theme chosen by the group.

Required Materials:

• Internet access for research purposes
• Website or blog creation tool (e.g., WordPress, Wix, etc.)
• Digital editing tools for creating artworks (e.g., Photoshop, GIMP, Canva, etc.)

Detailed Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity:

1. Theme Selection: the group must choose a socially relevant theme that will be the focus of the entire exhibition. Examples could be: gender issues, racial equality, climate crisis, etc.

2. Research and Artwork Selection: students should research artworks by contemporary artists that relate to the chosen theme. Each group must select at least 10 artworks.

3. Creation of Original Artworks: each group member should create a digital artwork related to the chosen theme. The artworks can be images, videos, audios, texts, etc.

4. Writing of Explanatory Texts: for each selected and created artwork, the group must write a brief explanatory text that contextualizes the artwork and explains its relation to the exhibition theme.

5. Creation of the Virtual Exhibition: using the website creation tool, the group should set up the virtual exhibition. Each artwork should be accompanied by the corresponding explanatory text.

6. Exhibition Presentation: each group must present the exhibition to the class, explaining the creation process, the choices made, and the conclusions reached.

Project Deliverables:

• Virtual Exhibition: a link to the virtual exhibition created by the group.

• Written Document: a report containing:

  • Introduction: the contextualization of the chosen theme, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the exhibition's objective.
  • Development: an explanation of the contemporary art theory that underpins the exhibition, a detailed description of the selected and created artworks, the methodology adopted, and discussion of the results.
  • Conclusions: a summary of the main points, the learnings obtained, and the conclusions about the project.
  • Bibliography: the sources used for artwork research and theoretical foundation.

This project will allow students to practice both technical and socio-emotional skills. While learning about contemporary art and creating their own artworks, they will also be working in teams, managing time, and solving problems, always in a creative and proactive manner.
