Organic Functions: Acyl Halide

Contextualization

The project focuses on "Acyl Halide," a key topic in organic chemistry that allows for the exploration of a wide range of fundamental concepts in Chemistry.

Acyl halide is any organic compound with the general formula RCOX where R is an organic group and X is a halogen atom (fluorine, chlorine, bromine, or iodine). These are a subtype of organic halides. Such compounds are widely used for the synthesis of polymers and pharmaceutical intermediates.

Acyl halides play a crucial role in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry due to their reactivity, which allows for the transformation of complex organic molecules. Understanding these molecules and their reactions enables the synthesis of new drugs, the development of new materials, and the creation of new routes for chemical production.

In our daily lives, we also encounter acyl halides in many places. For example, PVC (polyvinyl chloride), a widely used type of plastic, is made by polymerizing vinyl chloride, which is an acyl halide. Additionally, many medications contain acyl halides in their molecule, such as some antibiotics and pain medications.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Acyl Halide in Daily Life: A Practical and Theoretical Exploration"

Project Objective:

To explore the presence and importance of acyl halides in daily life and industry through research and the creation of a presentation and a report.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5, and each group will be assigned a specific sector to investigate - for example, medicine, plastics, food and beverages, etc. Each group should research how acyl halides are used in that sector, what is the relevance of their use, what are the environmental and health impacts, and how these impacts could be minimized.

Required Materials:

  • Internet access for research
  • Computer for report and presentation development
  • Presentation materials (such as a PowerPoint, video, poster, etc.)

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Form groups of up to 5 students.
  2. Choose a sector to research.
  3. Research the relevance of acyl halides in the chosen sector.
  4. Analyze the impacts of these substances on health and the environment in that sector.
  5. Develop proposals for more sustainable and safe ways of using acyl halides.
  6. Prepare a presentation on your findings and proposals.
  7. Prepare a detailed report on the project.

Project Deliverables:

To complete the activity, each group must deliver:

  • A presentation on the research conducted and the proposals for sustainable and safe use of acyl halides in the sector they researched.
  • A detailed report, divided into four sections:
    1. Introduction: describe the topic, its relevance, real-world applications, and the project's objective.
    2. Development: present the theory behind acyl halides, explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and finally, present and discuss the results obtained.
    3. Conclusion: summarize the main points, explain the learnings obtained, and draw conclusions about the project.
    4. Bibliography: indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

With this project, students will not only gain a deep understanding of acyl halides but also learn to work in teams, manage time, effectively communicate their ideas, and, most importantly, apply theoretical knowledge in the real world to propose solutions to real-life problems.
