Contextualization
Ketone is an organic function characterized by the presence of the carbonyl functional group (C=O) linked to two carbon atoms. Knowledge about its nomenclature is important, as ketones are present in our daily lives in various substances, such as solvents, medications, artificial flavors, and aromas.
First and foremost, understanding the nomenclature and structure of ketones is essential for any in-depth study of organic chemistry. From the creation of new medications to the production of flavorings and fragrances, the ability to effectively recognize and name ketones is a skill that every chemist should have. Without this foundation, many more advanced concepts and applications in chemistry would be inaccessible.
Secondly, ketones have enormous practical importance. For example, in medicine, many drugs contain ketones in their structures. There is also acetone, a very common solvent in cleaning products, nail polishes, and removers. Therefore, understanding the nomenclature of ketones can help us better understand the world around us, from the functioning of the medications we take to the products we use in our daily routine.
Ketones also play a significant role in the fragrance and flavor industry. Several natural and synthetic ketones are used to recreate smells and tastes in food and beauty products. Thus, understanding the nomenclature of ketones can also lead to a greater appreciation and understanding of these products and how they are created.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: "Cetomania: The Universe of Ketones"
Project Objective:
The project aims at understanding the nomenclature of ketones, recognizing ketones in substances and chemical structures, and applying this organic function in daily life.
Detailed Project Description:
The student groups, composed of 3 to 5 members, will carry out the project in three key stages: theoretical research, practical application, and reflective analysis.
Firstly, the group must conduct in-depth research on ketones, focusing on identification and nomenclature. In this stage, students should seek information from diverse sources, such as textbooks, educational websites, explanatory videos, among others.
In the second phase, the members will identify ketones in a set of fictional chemical structures created by the group itself, a challenge that will force students to apply the knowledge acquired in the research in a practical way.
Finally, the students will conduct a reflective analysis on the importance of ketones in daily life, exemplifying their presence in common use products, as well as their applications in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries.
Necessary Materials:
- Internet access for research purposes.
- Chemistry textbooks.
- Digital drawing programs or materials for manual drawings to create the chemical structures.
- Text editing software for the final report.
Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Completion:
- Formation of groups and delimitation of each member's responsibilities.
- Start of theoretical research on ketones, focusing on nomenclature and identification.
- After studying and discussing the collected research material, the group must create a set of fictional chemical structures containing ketones.
- Identification of ketones in the created structures, based on the studied theory.
- Elaboration of an analysis on the presence and application of ketones in daily life.
- Writing the final report, following the structure: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.
The project delivery consists of the written report and the created chemical structures. The report, in addition to containing a detailed description of the theoretical investigation and reflective analysis, must include the proper naming of the ketones present in the chemical structures created by the group.
The report writing should be done collectively, encouraging collaboration and effective communication among the members. The final document should demonstrate not only the understanding of theoretical concepts but also the practical application of these.
