Introduction to the Theme

Ketones are organic compounds of great importance in industry and daily life, they are formed by a characteristic group called the carbonyl group, which consists of a carbon atom directly linked to an oxygen atom by a double bond.

Ketones are part of our reality, existing in numerous materials that we use daily. They are used in the manufacture of resins, plastics, solvents, perfumes, medications, among others. Recognizing such compounds and understanding their properties and reactions are fundamental for the understanding of organic chemistry.

Moreover, ketones play a crucial role in the human body. They are naturally produced during the metabolism of fats and also when there is insufficient glucose in the body. However, excessive ketone production can lead to a condition called ketoacidosis, a serious complication of diabetes.

Contextualization and its importance

Ketones are very versatile and have a series of applications that directly impact our daily lives. Medications such as progesterone, an essential hormone in pregnancy, and cortisone, used to treat inflammation, are ketones. They also play an important role in the cosmetic industry, being used to give fragrance to perfumes.

On a more industrial scale, ketones like acetone are used as solvents in the manufacture of resins and plastics. Understanding the chemical properties and reactions of ketones is essential not only for the synthesis of new materials but also to ensure the safety and efficiency of the use of these compounds.

Therefore, the study of ketones is not only a fundamental part of organic chemistry but also has very real and practical implications, hence the importance of delving into this topic.

Practical Activity

Title: Experimenting with Ketones

Project Objective

To understand the concept, properties, and uses of ketones through a practical experimental activity. Students will also work together to research applications of ketones in daily life and industry, encouraging collaboration and group communication.

Project Description

Each group of 3 to 5 students will carry out a practical experiment involving ketones, more specifically with Propanone (Acetone), which is easily found in nail polish removers. The experiment should demonstrate the volatility and the ability of the ketone to dissolve substances. In addition, students must research and present 5 different applications of ketones in industry and daily life.

Necessary Materials

  • Acetone (found in nail polish removers).
  • Two transparent glass containers.
  • Water.
  • Vegetable oil.
  • Food coloring.
  • Nail polish.
  • Protective gloves and safety goggles.

Step by Step

  1. Volatility Experiment: First, the group will fill both containers, one with water and the other with acetone, halfway. Then, observe and record how long it takes for each liquid to evaporate. This demonstrates the volatility of acetone compared to water.

  2. Solvability Experiment: In a new container, fill halfway with water and add a few drops of food coloring. Now, add oil to create a separate layer on top. Finally, add acetone to the container. The reaction between acetone and the water and oil mixture should be observed and documented.

  3. Nail Polish Removal Experiment: Apply nail polish on a glass surface and let it dry. Then, use acetone to remove the nail polish from the surface. Record your observations.

  4. Applications Research: Alongside the practical activity, students should research and document 5 different applications of ketones in industry and daily life.

Project Submission

Students must submit a written report of their activities and findings. The report should consist of four sections:

  1. Introduction: Should contain the project context, including the relevance of ketones and a summary of the planned activities.

  2. Development: In this section, students should detail the theory behind their experiments, explain each activity in detail, describe the methodology used, and present and discuss the results obtained from the practical activities.

  3. Conclusion: Here, students should revisit the main points of the project, discuss what they have learned, and conclude with a final analysis of the project.

  4. Bibliography: Should include all sources consulted during the research and preparation of the project.

Students should take into consideration that this document, in addition to an assessment of their understanding and learning about ketones, is also an evaluation of their teamwork, time management, and communication skills, essential for the successful completion of the project.
