Introduction

Project Objective

The project aims to enable students to understand nitro compounds, their properties, characteristics, and practical uses. Students will need to research and present information about two or three specific nitro compounds, including how they are synthesized, their properties, potential hazards, and real-world applications.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people, and each group must choose two or three specific nitro compounds to focus on. The chosen compounds cannot be repeated among the groups. Some examples of nitro compounds that can be selected are nitroglycerin, TNT (trinitrotoluene), dinitrotoluene, metronidazole, etc.

Research should be conducted using chemistry books, scientific articles, and reliable sources on the web. The gathered information should allow students to fully understand the chosen compounds, including their chemical structure, synthesis methods, properties, associated risks and benefits, and practical applications.

At the end of the research process, each group must create a presentation that includes all the collected information, along with an illustrative poster that visually and creatively represents the information about the studied nitro compounds.

Required Materials

  • Computers with internet access
  • Presentation software (e.g., PowerPoint, Google Slides)
  • Materials for creating the poster (paper, pencils, markers, etc.)

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group should choose two or three specific nitro compounds to research. Ensure there is no repetition of compounds among the groups.
  3. Conduct in-depth research on the chosen compounds. The information should include, but not be limited to:
    • Chemical structure

  4. Organize the information clearly and precisely in a presentation.

Project Deliverables

In addition to the presentation and poster, each group must produce a detailed report of the findings, to be submitted in printed or digital document format.

This report should be structured as follows:

  1. Introduction: Provide context on the topic, its relevance and real-world applications, as well as the objective of this project.
  2. Development: Explain the theory behind the studied nitro compounds, detail the research conducted, indicate the methodology used to gather information, and finally, present and discuss the results obtained.
  3. Conclusion: Recap your main points, explain the learnings obtained, and draw conclusions about the project.
  4. Bibliography: List the sources you relied on to work on the project, such as books, websites, videos, etc.
