Theoretical Introduction
Phenols are a class of chemical compounds that have a benzene ring structure directly linked to a hydroxyl group (OH). This configuration makes phenols very unique because, unlike alcohols that have the hydroxyl group linked to a sp3 carbon, phenols have it linked to a sp2 carbon in the aromatic ring. This gives them very particular characteristics and properties, such as high reactivity and acidity.
Phenols are substances very present in our daily lives without us often realizing it. They are present in the composition of various products such as plastics, resins, detergents, medications, and even dyes. Understanding the characteristics, properties, and ways of obtaining phenols is essential because they play a crucial role in various sectors of the chemical industry.
In this project, we will discuss phenols not only from a theoretical point of view but also explore their practical applications and impacts in the real world to provide a comprehensive and contextualized understanding of the subject.
Contextualization
Regarding their relevance, phenols are extremely important in industry and science. As mentioned earlier, they are used in the manufacturing of a wide variety of products. However, they have harmful effects on health and the environment if not handled correctly.
Phenols are, by nature, toxic substances. Exposure to them can cause a range of health problems, from skin and eye irritation to more serious conditions such as cancer and nervous system alterations. Additionally, they can also be harmful to the environment as they are difficult to decompose and can contaminate water and soil.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: Phenols in Everyday Life: An Interactive Approach
Project Objective:
This project aims to help understand the concepts related to Phenols, their properties and characteristics, as well as their presence and application in products of our daily lives.
Project Description:
Students, in groups of 3 to 5, will conduct a survey of everyday products that contain phenols in their compositions, whether at home, school, or local stores. Students will also be tasked with researching the function of phenol in these products and the implications for health and the environment.
Necessary Materials:
- Internet for research
- Camera for taking photos (can be a cellphone camera)
- Notebook for taking notes
- Computer or similar device for report production
Step by Step:

Initial Research: Each group should conduct preliminary research on phenols, their properties, applications, and impacts on health and the environment. This research will provide the basis for the next steps.

Data Collection: Next, the groups should start searching for everyday products that contain phenols. They can be found in cleaning products, medications, plastics, etc. The groups should take photos of the products and label information that prove the presence of phenols.

Complementary Research: With the list of products in hand, students should research the function of phenol in each of the products and the implications for health and the environment.

Report Production: After data collection and research, the groups should organize the collected information and prepare a report in the form of a scientific article, following the scheme Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

Report Presentation: Finally, each group should present their report to the class. Each presentation should last between 10 and 15 minutes and should include a summary of the report, the presentation of photos of the products found, and a discussion on the impacts of phenols.
The reports should be well-structured and complete, containing all necessary parts:
- Introduction: Should contain a brief contextualization of phenols, their importance, the relevance of the research, and the work objectives.
- Development: Should present the list of products found, the collected information on the function of phenol in each of them, the implications for health and the environment, and a discussion of the results.
- Conclusion: Should summarize the results, discuss conclusions and reflections on the project, and what they learned from the research.
- Bibliography: Should present all sources used in the work, including books, websites, and videos.
It is expected that, by the end of this project, students will have learned about what phenols are, their properties, where we can find them, and their impact on health and the environment.
