In chemistry class, a key aspect to understanding how matter reacts and changes is to understand how each type of molecule is named and classified. Names are not only a way to identify substances, but also a way to understand their properties, structures, and behaviors. This is especially true for the class of organic compounds called alcohols.

Alcohols are chemical compounds characterized by the presence of one or more hydroxyl groups (-OH) directly linked to saturated carbon atoms, meaning they have already formed all the bonds they could. They are one of the most important and familiar classes of organic compounds, present in many substances we use in our daily lives, from the alcohol we use for cleaning to the alcohol present in alcoholic beverages.

Project Objective

Through this activity, it is expected that students learn to identify and name alcohols according to IUPAC rules, as well as understand the practical application of this knowledge in different sectors of our society.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group should research at least three different alcohols that are relevant in some aspect of the real world, whether in medicine, industry, agriculture, or even in people's daily lives. For each chosen alcohol, the groups should identify its molecular structure, correctly name it according to IUPAC nomenclature, and prepare a brief report explaining its relevance and application in a practical context.

It is expected that each student invest between 5 to 10 hours in the project development, whether in research, report elaboration, or presentation preparation.

Required Materials

• Organic chemistry textbooks or equivalent materials
• Internet access for complementary research
• Text editing programs (Word, Google Docs, etc.) for report elaboration

Detailed Steps

1. Group Formation: Students should form groups of 3 to 5 people.

2. Alcohol Research: Each group should search for at least three alcohols that are relevant in some aspect of the real world.

3. Identification and Nomenclature: For each chosen alcohol, students must identify its molecular structure and correctly name it according to IUPAC rules.

4. Report Elaboration: The groups should prepare a report for each of the researched alcohols, where they must explain the relevance and application of each in the chosen practical context.

5. Presentation: At the end of the project, each group should present their results to the class. They should explain the relevance of each researched alcohol and how the knowledge of its nomenclature can be applied in the real world.

Project Deliverables

• Report: Each group should deliver a report containing a summary of the research conducted. The report should include an Introduction, where the theme is contextualized, its relevance and application in the real world, and the objective of this project. The Development should bring the theory behind the project's central theme, the activity in detail, the methodology used, and the results obtained. In the Conclusion, students should revisit the main points, explaining the learnings obtained and the conclusions drawn from the project. Finally, the Bibliography should indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project.

• Presentation: Each group should make an oral presentation of their results, where they will explain the relevance of each researched alcohol and how the knowledge of its nomenclature can be applied in the real world.
