Biochemistry is a discipline that converges to the understanding of life at its most fundamental level. It is the science that explores the chemical components of life, the molecules, and the metabolic processes that occur at the cellular level. It studies the continuous and coordinated chemical transformations within cells and living organisms. The central themes of biochemistry include the structure and function of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids; the kinetics and mechanisms of chemical reactions in biological systems; energy and metabolism; and the regulation of metabolic processes.

Biochemistry has profound practical implications that affect all aspects of our daily lives, from health, agriculture to technology. It is at the foundation of modern medicine, allowing us to understand and treat diseases at the molecular level. It contributes to agriculture, helping us understand and improve plant nutrition and disease resistance. Furthermore, biochemistry is at the forefront of developing new technologies, from bioenergy production to engineering biocompatible materials.

Introduction

Biochemistry plays a fundamental role in life, with significant impact in various areas such as medicine, agriculture, ecology, and technology. The chemical transformations that occur in our bodies, the mechanism of action of drugs, food and fuel production, among other applications, involve biochemical processes. It is essential to know the molecular components that make up living beings and understand how these molecules interact and transform.

In this project, we will explore the fundamental concepts of Biochemistry, outline the importance and application of these concepts in a multidisciplinary perspective involving Chemistry and Biology. We will also develop technical skills, such as analyzing material properties and differentiating and classifying biochemical constituents, as well as socio-emotional skills, such as time management, teamwork, critical and creative thinking.

Practical Activity: The Cellular Model in Your Hand

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to develop a three-dimensional model of a human cell, highlighting the main biochemical components (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids) and their functions. This model will serve as a basis for discussion and analysis, allowing students to deepen their knowledge of the fundamental concepts of biochemistry and the role these components play in the cell.

Detailed Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 people, will work together to creatively build a three-dimensional model of a human cell using materials that can be easily found. The activity should be carried out over a period of two weeks, considering the hours dedicated to planning, research, material acquisition, model construction, and report writing.

Required Materials

  1. Materials for building the model, which may include, but are not limited to, clay, styrofoam, cardboard, styrofoam balls, colored ribbons, toothpicks, paints, markers, etc.
  2. Cardboard or other large paper for the model base.
  3. Computer with internet access for research.
  4. Camera or smartphone for documenting the process.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Research and Planning (approximately 3 hours): Each group should research the main biochemical components of a human cell, understand their functions, and decide how to represent them in the model. They should plan together how their model will be, what materials are needed, and how they will organize them in the cell. Each group member should have a defined role in the project development.

  2. Material Acquisition (approximately 2 hours): Based on the planning, each group should acquire the materials needed for construction. This step may involve a visit to craft stores or ordering materials online.

  3. Model Construction: This step involves assembling the model of the human cell with the collected materials. Each biochemical component should be represented proportionally and identifiably (approximately 6 hours).

  4. Analysis and Discussion (approximately 1 hour): After building the model, students should discuss and analyze the represented biochemical components. They should indicate the function and importance of each component for the cell and the organism as a whole.

Project Deliverables

At the end, the groups should present as the final result of the project:

  1. The Cellular Model in Your Hand.
  2. A detailed report containing Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

Writing the Written Document

The report should follow the following structure:

  1. Introduction: Description of the theoretical concepts explored during the project, their relevance and application in the real world, and the project's objective.

  2. Development: Description of the methodology used, representing the model construction process, including difficulties encountered, decision-making, and solutions found. It should also present and discuss the obtained result, that is, the relevance of each biochemical component in the cell.

  3. Conclusions: Recap of the main points, explaining the learnings obtained about biochemistry and the conclusions drawn about the project.

  4. Bibliography used: Indication of the sources that were used to develop the project, where they researched information for the model construction and to support their discussions, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

These activities engage students in understanding biochemistry in a playful and practical way, optimizing learning and developing skills such as teamwork, creativity, time management, research, and communication.
