Chemistry is a science that permeates various areas of our daily lives, and often we do not realize how present it is in our lives. Contemplating this perspective, we bring to our project the Sulfonated Functions, special representatives of Organic Chemistry, which have in their structure the sulfur atom, an important element that makes up the periodic table.
Sulfonated Functions are compounds that contain the functional group sulfite, sulfonate, or sulfone. These are groups of organic compounds that contain sulfur, making them unique and of great importance in the chemical sciences. Their properties and functions vary widely, from acting as surfactants in soaps and detergents to their use in medications, highlighting Celecoxib, a widely used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
Regarding properties, thiols, also known as mercaptans, are the sulfur equivalents of alcohols and have strong odors. On the other hand, thioethers, equivalents of ethers, have properties similar to ethers, but with greater reactivity due to the presence of the sulfur atom.
Importance of Sulfonated Functions
Sulfonated functions have a unique significance in the development of medicines and industrial chemicals. For example, many drugs used in treatments for diseases such as arthritis and migraine use sulfur in their composition. In the industry, sulfonated functions are essential in the production of detergents and dyes.
Moreover, compounds such as sulfur dioxide (SO2) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) are widely used in the chemical industry as raw materials for the production of various other products. Project Objective
The objective of this project is to dissect, comprehensively and in detail, thioethers and thiols, taking into account their synthesis methods, properties, nomenclature, and applications.
Detailed Project Description
Each group will be responsible for creating a thorough mini-seminar on one of the types of sulfonated compounds - thioether or thiol.
The content of the mini-seminar should include:
- Origin and history of the compound - When and how the compound was discovered and by whom.
- Chemical structure - Scheme of the molecule and its structural characteristics.
- Synthesis methods - How the compound is synthesized in the laboratory and on an industrial scale.
- Properties of the compound - Physical and chemical properties and how their structures relate to these properties.
- Applications - How this compound is used in industry, medicine, and other fields.
- Connection with society and the environment - The benefits and risks to human health and the environment associated with the compound.
The mini-seminar should last about 30 to 45 minutes, with time for questions and discussions after the presentation.

Detailed Step-by-Step
- Form a group of 3 to 5 students. Each group should choose whether to work with the thioether or thiol compound.
- Each group should research and create a mini-seminar on the assigned compound, addressing the sections described in the project description.
- Write a detailed script of the presentation, including which points each group member will address.
- Create a detailed slide presentation that covers all the information from the research script. The slides should be clear, concise, and visually appealing, using images and diagrams whenever possible to help explain the concepts.
- Present your mini-seminar to the class. Make sure to open up for questions and discussions after the presentation.
- After the presentation, the group should write a written document based on the seminar.
The document should follow the format of a scientific report, including the following main topics:
- Introduction: Presentation of the theme and its relevance, as well as the project's objective.
- Development: Details of the theory covered, description of the activity, methodology used, and the results obtained, including an in-depth discussion of the points presented in the seminar.
- Conclusion: Return to the main points and highlight the learnings and conclusions drawn from the project.
- Bibliography: Record of the sources consulted for the project's elaboration.
Each student in the group should have a significant participation in both the preparation and presentation of the seminar and in the writing of the document.
