Reflexive Pronouns

Context

Reflexive pronouns are an essential part of the English language. They are used when the subject and the object of the sentence are the same person. For example, "I cut myself". Reflexive pronouns in English include myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, and themselves.

These pronouns play a fundamental role in communication, providing clarity and precision to the language. A solid understanding of reflexive pronouns will allow you to communicate more effectively in English, whether in a professional, academic, or casual environment. Furthermore, they enable you to better understand what you are reading or hearing in English.

Reflexive pronouns are used in a variety of situations and contexts. They are particularly prevalent in literature and formal writing. For example, an author may use a reflexive pronoun to emphasize a point, or a character in a book may use one to express intense emotion. Additionally, they are common in everyday conversations, where they are used to indicate that a person did something by or for themselves.

The importance of reflexive pronouns extends beyond the English language and the high school context. They are often used in job interviews, academic essays, and much more. A solid understanding of how to use reflexive pronouns correctly can significantly improve your communication skills.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Reflecting on Reflexive Pronouns"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is not only to teach the use of reflexive pronouns but also to integrate content creation skills, teamwork, time management, and to encourage the use of the English language as a form of global communication.

Detailed Project Description

In this project, groups of 3 to 5 students will produce a 10-15 minute short film in English, using reflexive pronouns to tell a story. The story must be written by them and must contain at least one example of each of the eight reflexive pronouns.

The film production should involve research, scriptwriting, acting, directing, filming, and editing. Students are encouraged to be creative in the story and the execution of the film.

Additionally, students must create a portfolio documenting the entire process, from the initial brainstorming to the final editing of the film. The portfolio should include a detailed theoretical explanation of reflexive pronouns, including examples from the film.

Required Materials

  • Camera for filming (can be a cellphone)
  • Computer with video editing software
  • Internet for research and reference materials
  • Notebook and pen for brainstorming and script organization

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Research and Theoretical Learning: Students should start by researching and learning about reflexive pronouns. In this process, they should use the suggested resources above and seek more information if necessary.

  2. Story Brainstorming: In groups, students should have a brainstorming session to decide on the story that will be told in the short film.

  3. Scriptwriting: After defining the story, the script should be written, ensuring that each of the eight reflexive pronouns is used at least once.

  4. Pre-Production: Choosing filming locations, selecting actors (group), and rehearsals.

  5. Production: Filming the short film.

  6. Post-Production: Editing the film, including cutting, sound, and possible effects.

  7. Portfolio Creation: Documentation of the entire process, with a special focus on the theoretical explanation of reflexive pronouns and the use of film examples.

Project Deliverables

The project will have two main deliverables:

  1. The Short Film: This will be the practical outcome, highlighting the learned content about reflexive pronouns and the ability to work as a team to create a short film.

  2. The Portfolio: This will be the written document accompanying the short film. It should start with an introduction to the topic and explain why reflexive pronouns are used in the English language. Next, the theory behind reflexive pronouns should be explained, including a section to explain the methodology used in the project. The final sections should present and discuss the results obtained and conclude the work by summarizing the main points, stating the learnings acquired, and drawing conclusions about the project. The bibliography should be indicated at the end of the document.
