Verbs: Tense Exercises

Context

The English language, with its global nature and constant presence in various fields of knowledge, is an essential tool in the life of any student. In this context, one of the most relevant and complex parts of English grammar is verb tenses. They are the key to expressing actions, states, and events that occurred in the past, present, and future.

Verb tenses allow for precise communication, enabling us to specify not only the moment an action occurs but also the duration and relative sequence to other actions. They are the foundation for telling stories and experiences, describing processes and events, and making predictions, thus becoming an indispensable tool in any type of text or conversation.

Delving into a more detailed study of verb tenses allows us to improve our ability to express ourselves in English, as well as develop our understanding of the language. Verb tenses are one of the most challenging parts of English grammar for non-native speakers, but at the same time, they are one of the most rewarding to master, as they open up a new range of communication possibilities.

In the real world, mastering verb tenses in English is extremely useful. This can open doors to job opportunities, as many global companies require English fluency from their employees. Additionally, it is necessary for academic studies, where most scientific literature is in English. Finally, understanding verb tenses can enhance the appreciation of English books, movies, and music, as many nuances of the plot and characters are expressed through the precise use of verb tenses.

With that in mind, a fun and interactive project will be proposed so that you, students, can practice and consolidate your knowledge of verb tenses while having fun and working as a team.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "The Journey of Verb Tenses"

Project Objective:

The main objective of this project is to deepen students' understanding of the use of verb tenses in English through a playful and practical method. Additionally, the activity aims to stimulate collaboration, creativity, and time management skills of the students.

Detailed Project Description:

Groups must create and present an original English-language play that includes and highlights the use of all verb tenses. The plot and characters are of free choice, however, the dialogues and situations must be structured in a way that all verb tenses are employed correctly and in appropriate contexts.

Required Materials:

  • Notebook or paper for notes.
  • Pens or pencils.
  • Internet for research and reference.
  • Camera or cellphone for recording the final play.
  • Video editing software (optional).

Step by Step:

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 people and choose a leader for the group. The leader will be responsible for ensuring that all parts of the project are being carried out as planned.

  2. Together, discuss and decide on the plot and characters of the play. Remember, the story should allow for the use of all verb tenses.

  3. Write the script of the play in English, making sure that all verb tenses are correctly used in context. Review the script multiple times to ensure linguistic accuracy.

  4. Decide who will play each character and rehearse the play. It is important that each group member is comfortable with their assigned part of the text and can pronounce the English sentences correctly.

  5. When you feel confident, record the play. Make sure the audio is clear and the performance is consistent with the script.

  6. Edit the video, if necessary, for a better presentation.

Project Deliverables:

  1. English Script: The script must be delivered in written format, with the proper indication of the verb tenses used in each scene or dialogue. Include a brief summary of the story and a description of the characters.

  2. Video of the Play: The play must be recorded on video and delivered along with the script. All group members must actively participate in the play, whether acting, directing, filming, etc.

  3. Final Report: The report must be written individually and follow the format of Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography. In the introduction, the student should contextualize what the activity is and its importance. The development should detail the verb tenses and the activity carried out, including the methodology used and the results obtained. The conclusions should recap the points described and describe learnings and conclusions from the project. The Bibliography should list the sources that helped in the development of the project.

This is a project that, at the same time, challenges and entertains. In addition to learning and practicing English verb tenses in an original way, you will also be developing collaboration, creativity, time management, and presentation skills.
